It's definitely an issue with the Stinger. I bought a Sorento the same day I bought my Stinger and with the same amount of miles the Sorento has zero paint chips.

The dealer acknowledges it's a problem, the district manager said it's a problem, and now I just need the Field Tech Specialist to agree it's a problem.

What's the build date on yours?

November 2017.

4764 miles here since March 2nd 2018, Sunset Yellow. Have 10 flakes that I have found. 3 big flakes UNDER my license plate. Chips don't leave perfect shapes and smooth primer, or bare metal.

I went to the dealer today and had pictures made, and have a case # open with Kia. I'm just waiting to hear back from the factory rep for this area. Don't care about a build date, it's a pprblem and I just want it fixed. They are taking WAY to good care of us early adopters not to come up with a solution.

Kia will have a solution, we aren't dealing with OTHER manufacturers who deny any wrongdoing with their POS cars. Just give it some time.

Build date 11/17 silky silver base and maybe 2-3 repaired chips including a few “impact” marks on the plastic bumper......almost like something left a skid mark in the paint. But you really have to look for them.....very small.

They are still cleaning up road gravel from an extremely protracted winter here, and I already have a 10 inch crack on my windshield from a flying stone. The hood, bumper and front end have no chips at all that I can see, despite being much lower to the ground and susceptible to flying rocks - and I just had a close look while wiping the latest round of bugs off this afternoon. I've been procrastinating on getting film applied, and will probably do so this week - but for now all there is on there is paint. Build date is January/18, paint is White Pearl.

Mine is Feb 2018 build, and no chips or fish here. ;)
so far :o

This must be the clearest proof here that it is an adhesion issue mainly with 2017 built cars and that KIA MUST have been VERY aware there was an issue and they changed the painting process!!

Just saw this on YouTube. The car is yellow, the theory is metallic paint has an additional clear coat which is better.

Saw the same video last night and I definitely have nothing like what he shows. Interestingly, I had just commented to my dealer about their yellow car......sold long ago now.....that I didn’t like the yellow because it was a very flat yellow with no metallic look. Very possible there is something to this.....at least with the yellow. Might turn out to be a VERY special edition color indeed.

I bought my son a black stinger back in January. He just came home from school and showed me some paint chips. They are on the lip of the hood near the windshield. There are about 5 chips. It’s definitely not from rocks. I just called my salesperson who told me to call the service manager on Monday. It’s in a inconspicuous area so touch up paint would work. I just want this on file in case it happens to get worse.

Are you sure those chips aren't from wiper arm damage? While its in the manual, a lot of salespeople didn't explain the 'wiper park' feature to new owners. The recessed wipers will not clear the hood if you try and lift them from their normal at rest position - if you attempt to pull them up they will contact and damage the hood. The wipers must be raised to an upright 'park' position before servicing them or cleaning the windshield.

These are just 3 of the spots. Definitely not 'rock chips' as a service tech at a local dealer (Benson Kia of Spartanburg) tried to brush it off as with a sideways glance at the 2 on the hood. I quickly corrected him, showed him the other spots, and told him to just take the pics and submit them to Kia with my case number. Side note: I want the 'tech' to explain chips UNDER the license plate......

Now I'm just waiting on a call from Kia to see what the next steps are. I'm sure Kia won't try to brush this under the rug because there is too much publicity and people watching the car. I have a positive outlook until I'm given a reason not too.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I would go through the hurdles and hoops to get this car again tomorrow if I had too.

Sir....The rock chips behind the plate can be attributed to you driving in reverse at excessive speed! It created what we call "a wind tunnel effect" The plate simply vibrated the paint off. :)

LOL!!! That 3mph wind is hell isn't it?

Could have also been the draft off of a Rio during transport. Mixed with the aerodynamics of a Stinger created a vacuum effect to the paint known as rock chips to the untrained eye!

If you don’t get any joy from the dealers, all of you who posted here should start a class action case via a lawyer at Kia. That way Kia will also be responsible for future buyers who have the same problem.

That might happen if they don’t take care of the paint

E7ACCD10-1C59-4991-B99A-313635029EAA.webp OK here’s something I have never seen in any car I’ve ever owned and I wonder if it’s paint chipping related. I got the car yesterday and thought I examined it well. No damage I could easily see.
Today I parked near a tree which cast a shadow that highlited or shadowed the lower area of the rear door. At first I though I had been keyed then I touched it and thought the door was cracked. Then I examined closer and saw that there was body colored tape on those panels down low. I was so confused I first thought it was packing tape that was missed. I’m still finding the transparent and white stuff. I saw the car in the lot and it had recently arrived and wasn’t prepped yet. There’s LOTS of tape.
I texted my sales guy. He replied that it was protective film and should stay on. Wow. Now that I know it’s there it bothers me. It won’t age well, I’m pretty sure. But leaving it for now as if it’s supposed to stay it may not remove well and that’s all I need. I’m including a picture.
Do your cars have this?

Yeah, it's an "optional" protection package that a lot of cars have included from the factory. There's also a small strip of it on the hood around the logo.
