Anyone ever experience a kind of creaking sound from your steering wheel column? It's a very weird sound, my car only makes it in the mornings during the first few turns. I can't replicate the sound anywhere on the column by pressing on it or the wheel so I'm thinking it may be internal? Can't for the life of me think what could be causing it, I'm about to take the sucker apart and see if I can figure out what it is.

The only noise I have ever thought I heard was either from the steering or the front suspension. Also when first starting out. But I am so hypersensitive to any developing noise (after all the talk on here about NOISES), that when it goes away right away, I think I've imagined it.

I'm thinking that the steering column with its automated telescoping, tilting features, is a prime target for developing extraneous noises. Why these would dissipate shortly after startup I could not begin to say. Heh.

Huh, glad I found this. 2018 AWD GT2 here... and my buddy described this noise as my "dying yeti". Happens/ed for me when the temps are warmer. GROOOOOOAN as it goes up, GROOOAAAAN as it goes down. With summer weather here, it's embarrassing with the windows down to say the least.

My car is literally at the dealership right now (day 6 of this already). I do not love the Sorento they gave me ... grumble.

Word from the service manager is that Kia US is very interested in this issue, and, that the result is I'm getting an entire new steering column under warranty. It's been ordered and should be in tomorrow night.

I'll keep you posted when I have a chance to see the actual notes/service records and get to talk to them in person.

it groans when the car goes up and down? Mine kind of creaks when I turn the wheel side to side, it takes at least a 90 degree turn. I haven't noticed the sound outside the car, I don't think anyone outside can hear it, it isn't nearly that loud. I can't hear it if music is playing at a 5 or higher.

just happens when the steering column goes up and down as the car is turned on/off. Yeah, service advisor said it's strange and he'd not seen this... nor had the person he was working with at Kia USA.

I <3 warranties though...hahaha. Car drives fine... steered fine, and I honestly figured they were just going to lube up a pivot point. Nope... whole new steering column. Strange!

ohh, weird, mine doesn't do that but it's possibly related. Let me know how it turns out!

So frustrating... Just got a call from the service manager...

The new steering column went in just fine. However, the service manager still says there's a groan when the column raises and lowers when turning the car on/off. While he states it's "10% of the initial noise" when I brought it in, he's still unhappy with the results.

Me too.

So this afternoon, I'm picking the car up to drive WITH the groan, and, he's ordering yet another steering column from Kia USA. Due to the ungodly delays here on this, I advised I will drop the car off, when the parts are actually in, as we're now on day 12 of this Sorento rental...

I'll try to take an audio recording of it tonight and post up here in case anyone else is getting this issue and wondering if they're isolated like I'm feeling.

I hate having an issue "they're just not hearing about elsewhere".

Boo.

The "groan" is only when the car is turned on and off as the steering column takes the new position? It doesn't make any noise while operating? Because if that's the case, I'd think the noise is normal. And how annoying can a noise be that lasts a couple of seconds??

This wasnt a quiet groan. Think a dry hinge that hasn't moved in 20 years flexing...and bump the decibel about 30 higher than you're imagining. You could hear it outside the car with the windows up...

Just picked it up, and, the dealer had just heard back from the tech in Irvine. Allegedly the motor was giving out in the column that raises and lowers it.

Today's noises were from the local shop installing the dash incorrectly... when it was put together right, the groan was gone.

Per the tech, it's the only instance of this they've had reported so far in the US.

Regardless, she's now home, she's clean, she doesn't groan and I'm absolutely sold that I'll never ever ever own a sorento.

Oh! Well, you didn't provide those elucidations prior to this. That doesn't sound good at all. Glad you're all put back together. And here's hoping (for everyone else) that you remain unique! :P "Only one I've heard of" sounds good.

Sincere apologies for hijacking op's thread. Thought it'd be the same thing....and who knows, maybe it is. Either way, yeah, I guess it's probably still good posting about the experience for the greater good of future searches

I have the exact same creaking noise upon turning the wheel on a 3 week old car. Usually only at low speeds and more often in the first few minutes after startup. Have you taken it to the deale?

There’s a couple of threads on this. One guy took it to the dealer and they tried a fix but it came back then the thread died.

I’ve had it for awhile and it always seems to come back after a few weeks after adding felt tape. I believe it’s the lower left spring in the airbag/horn on my car that’s making the noise, next time I get in there I’m going to try taping the coils of the spring to see if that will fix it.

I also have a rubbing noise in my steering column when turning lock to lock. Only noticeable when turning the wheel a lot, sounds like the column cover is dragging on the steering wheel, Haven't really dove into it to check, would rather not bring it back to the dealer for a trivial problem that they'll likely take forever to fix.

I took mine in to the dealer and they found the dust cover inside the steering column had slipped down. They fixed it and lubricated it and it’s been fine so far. Took a few hours, but not too bad. They’d never seen it before.

I have the same noise. I notice it when pulling out of my driveway.

my stinger GT also does it it's in the morning for a few turns of steering wheel it's making a weird creaking noise. Right behind the horn. No big deal. I'm not going to bother getting it fixed.

Same here, usually when its cold and in mornings. Dealer could not replicate so they didnt do anything. I'd prefer to fix/lubricate myself if anyone knows the exact cause?
