CPI install question

Another option might be to just find a close to matching aluminum 3” pipe and have someone drill and tap for the injector to avoid having to buy the whole fmic.

The pipe shown is the cold side charge pipe that comes up on the passenger side to the throttle body. It has a regular clamp.

That goofy clamp everyone hates is on the other side coming from the Y.
Thanks, i couldn't remember what side it was. Nevermind the fact i have one sitting around.

Sorry for the topic change real quick. Do you know if the stock 3.3 FMIC is internally directional? Some sort of internal air diverters to utilize the whole thing. Could it be used either direction and still do the cooling as intended is probably the better question? First turbo car so been learning as i go.

I don’t “know” but it’s unlikely directional since it’s so short dimensionally and the ports are centered. I’d have to dig it out from under some other boxes to scope it.

Tall coolers with side entries tend to have diverters. I bet the Wagner has one.

Just a intercooler bit of trivia. An old war plane pilot/mechanic explained to me the coolers we have are actually aftercoolers. An intercooler is one found in between turbos/superchargers that are in series.

Intercooler was a marketing misnomer in the automotive industry that stuck. So we should be writing FMAC!

It’s literally up to your imagination, skill set and wallet.

The pipe OD is 60mm

My personal choice would be those charge pipes by AFE.

Thanks! So silicone outer but something different on the inside? Do you happen to know what that would be called or have a link to that?

Intake Hoses | IntakeHoses.com - Couplers, Elbows, Silicone or Rubber, Tubing, Clamps (I use these guys a lot. Thick couplings with extra long legs for lots of fitment possibilities.)

Treadstone has some good stuff to add meth nozzles, as does Mist-A-Pipe and Performance MRP, Billet Aluminum MAF

Good to know on the OD dimension and thanks for the links!

Thanks

The fmic is looking tempting at this point.
Did you never hear back on that FMIC? Saw you 2 PM'D back and forth. That sucks if he bailed on you.

He did write back initially and gave me a great price he was willing to ship it out to me and I said let’s do it and haven’t heard back since. It would have saved me $300 from new so that sucks lol. I think he might have regretted staying the price he did and went silent to avoid committing to it.

I’m going to say in the end it’s a good thing and I can just diy the necessary pipe for the CPI kit and save some coin towards the EK1 lite and ECU tune or back end flash with higher timing custom added.

Sux on the ghosting but so be it i guess. Keep us posted on how it all works out. Hell should be fun no matter what. Always cool to sit back and say "i made that"

@Hawkdid me a massive favor with info on the 3.3 Intercooler so hopefully ill have an "i made that" moment in the coming month or so as well.

That CPI made a massive difference in my buddies ride so definitely cool! Plus the stock unit saves some weight as well compared to an aftermaket unit. Every bit helps. Its actually a decent stock intercooler too so thats also a plus

He finally wrote back but I think I’m going to pass on it. I’ve been reading about the stock ic working fine and has better throttle response because it’s a lot smaller and I don’t plan on tracking my car so I don’t really see the benefit of spending even $450+ on that mod now. I’ll just diy the piping for the CPI and put the money towards a full ecu tune earlier than I expected.

I’m beginning to collect the minimal parts for the CPI install and am not getting much help on the FB forum for 3.3l performance. I’m going to go with installing the CPI injector right off the passengers side intercooler piping at the turn and wanted to see if anyone could verify that the silicone elbow id need is just a 90 degree piece. It looks to be but making sure it isn’t something like a 110 degree. My intercooler is the stock one.

I'm looking to have the BMS CPI kit installed on the stock IC setup.

How did you end up installing your system?

BMS had suggested I could drill and tap the stock pipe where the arrow is in the image. I'm wondering if it'd be better to replace that with a pipe similar to what you were considering though...

Thx

Did you end up making any diy fittings for your IC setup?

Do you have any thoughts on drill/tapping the stock IC as BMS suggested in my post above?

Thx

No i didn't. I ended up spending my "car fund" on other mods. Which cost me more, but worth it.

As for the drill and tap question, ill probably get some hell for this Hahahaha! If you can snag an extra elbow from someone who swapped FMIC or a salvage yard car it gives you more oops room. Never hurt to have some extras. And at that point you can get all the work done then pull you front end off and install. No pressure than to have it done and back together for the next day so you can drive.
It really shouldn't be that difficult. Just take ypur time.

It’s looking slightly obtuse to me. 100 degrees. View attachment 79537
Is this the stock hose that attaches on the passenger side to the funky stock IC outlet?

The one I have circled in red?

Is that just a regular rubber/silicone hose or something else?

Yup, that’s the one.

Looks like a nicely made silicone pressure coupler like the ones Gates produce.

I think it measured 60mm.

So it seems like the easiest route would be to buy another 2.5" 90 degree elbow and the BMS fuel it Coupler and I'd be good to go for the CPI setup vs drilling/tapping into that black stock IC outlet box thing on the oem IC.

Thoughts?

Like this guy did...

Might work, not a lot of space to work with that’s not on the radius.

Could try fitting this 2 3/8” elbow with two strait couplers. Once you cut it down to size and mark the best location, you could have a local fabricator add a bung.

Might consider straight couplers with a single hump to add back some flexibility.
