Hey, I was just chilling out and started thinking about the name Stinger. It's a great car name.
It got me thinking about other cool car names, and then came up with the idea of starting a discussion on what you folks think is/was a cool name for cars.
One of my favourites is the Jensen Interceptor. I also like Charger, Mustang, Impala, among others.
What do you think is a cool car name? What about bad names (Pinto....lol?).

Jalopy
Drundulet (драндулет)

Its funny how brands have designated certain things into car model names.
Ford was the 4 legged animals like mustang, Pinto, Impala, Dodge with more aggressive names like charger, Challenger
Chevy was places I believe Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Camaro.
Imports suck in comparison...Bmw and Audi use letter numbers.....
Nothing sexy sounding about M4...lol

I don't mind the letter/number combos when they mean something, but the turbo+downsizing trend has really screwed up the displacement-based names (370Z, M45, E550, S65) since automakers didn't want their car models to sound like a downgrade. An M340i should be a 3 series with the TT 4.0 V8!

Impala is Chevy (introduced in 1958), but ya, I have trouble as well with all these makers that use letters and numbers.
Mercedes has to be one of the worst. I have no idea what any of their monikers actually mean. C series, E series, etc. No idea.
BMW would be a close second.
On the other side of the coin, there are so many bland nondescript car names now.
Everything from Camry, Corolla, Envision, Sonata, Accord, Tiguan, Elantra, and goodness knows the other 90% of car names.
None of them bring up any passion or interest. Boring and forgetful.
Some names come from other vehicles, airplanes etc. Spitfire is a great name, as is Mustang and Corvette for example.
Spitfire is more closely associated with the WW2 fighter, as well as the P-51 Mustang. Corvette was a type of anti submarine WW2 ship.
Still great names though.

I must of misread. For some reason I thought this thread was about folks naming their cars. And yes, the above is a good representation of a drundulet.

I used to be in 4th gen Camaro (which means friend) and Firebird (great name) camp and I had a 1998 Trans Am (after a racing series…GM paid a royalty to use that name). SLP Engineering developed a special Firebird model called the Fire Hawk.

We were also into modding our cars. A friend had a massively powerful engine in his and named his car Warbird. Mine was modded for autox and lapping days (lots of suspension mods) and I called it Fire Roc, named after the mythical Arabian bird of prey (Rokh). Those were fun times!

As a former multiple Firebird owner I like what you're selling. Firehawk is the best name!

Owned a Firebird Formula, base Firebird and my last was a 3rd Trans Am gta.

Btw, did you know that if you got really deep pockets you can build a new 91-92 Firehawk?

Since I happen to own this vehicle, I kinda like the name.

Did not know about the 3rd gen Firehawk continuation series. Limited to a run of 25. I’ll bet they were all pre-sold.

No love for the Daihatsu Charade?

How about the Plymouth Prowler. I own a 1998 SS Camaro which is similar to the Firehawk.

Wasn't the Firehawk a step above? I know all the Fbodys are similar but the Camaro SS is more akin to the ws6 Trans Am I thought? Or is the z28 like the ws6?

GM and Pontiac would send their z28's and Firebird's to another company called SLP. The SS Camaro's and Pontiac Trans Am Firehawks were all products of SLP with their conversion parts. My hood and the hatch are SLP parts. Yea it is a little confusing and they made more SS's than Firehawks. The WS6 was a Pontiac code and was not a SLP conversion. A guy that lived near me had a red Firehawk II. Very rare maybe a 1997 with a 335hp sticker and man did that exhaust sound good. SLP made the exhaust as well. I love mine it is rare and cool. It has the GM 1LE race package and is an SS so it is a 1 of 1 for 1998. The GM Heritage museum was interested in buying my car for their collection about 10 years ago.

Yes, good ol SLP. I'm not familiar with the Camaro side of them. I remember looking at a couple early 4th gen LT1 Firehawks at the dealership back in the day. Neither of which had t-tops, which I thought was odd back then. They even had a Grand Prix GTX parked next to them. I always wanted that slp GTX hood to go with my slp g1 whale tail spoiler on my Grand Prix. Kinda crazy that a new v6 Toyota Camry more has HP than some of those 5.7 LT1s. Obviously the Firehawks had a bit more.

I’ve been to and toured the Ste Therese plant where the f-bodies were made. Camaro’s and Firebirds were made on the same assembly line. The Camaro SSs, Firehawks and WS-6s were built as complete cars inccluding “re-cycled” hoods that were used time and again.

I’ve also been to the SLP plant that did the conversions. Once the conversions were done and the SLP options installed, the cars were shipped back to the GM plant for distribution to dealers.

The WS-6s were converted by ASC, as I recall. Interesting side note. ASC initially had trouble getting the paint right on the fiberglass parts until the guys at SLP showed them how to do it.

The WS-6 and Camaro SS were essentially equivalents (hood replacement). The Firehawk was different in that the hood had heat extractors and a new front bumper cover.

I started driving in the '80s and was heavily into water-cooled VW of that era. Drove a Golf but always loved the name "Scirrocco". Just had that exotic - bordering mystical - vibe, of a phenomenon only a privileged well-traveled few experienced first hand.

Maserati Khamsin, same idea, name it after nasty N. African wind storms. They go for over $100K it looks like.

Hey, that’s a great topic! Stinger is definitely a strong and memorable car name.

I really like names that instantly give you a sense of power or personality—Interceptor, Charger, Mustang, and Impala are all classics for a reason. They just sound fast and bold.

There are also some fun and creative naming ideas out there that show the lighter side of car culture. I recently came across this list of cute and creative car names that adds an interesting twist to the discussion iguides.org

As for bad names… yeah, Pinto is usually the first one people laugh about 😄. Naming can really make or break a car’s image.

Curious to hear what other names people love or regret!
