Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof

Intriguing. Hopefully something I can do in my garage.

If it's anything to do with the frame under the headliner, unlikely. I've read the KGIS manual on how to R&R the sunroof, per the manual you need to remove an absolute ton of the trim to get the headliner down. I am curious "to standard procedure" is overkill though, I would think it should be possible to just pull the top half of the A, B and C pillar trim down to drop the headliner enough to work on the bolts if needed, but I don't know how far the headliner extends into the pillar trim.

*Edit* CK-19 GT2 beat me to it, he'd know better than me. I only have theoretical knowledge, I haven't pulled the interior apart in my car lol.

According to my Kia certified mechanics (I'm only a salesman LOL) the problem shouldn't be anything inside the headliner or with the tracks itself, but that could be only for our Florida vehicles. they can tell because when the sunroof is completely open there's not really any noise, most noises are heard when the sunroof is in tilt or completely closed. We're looking at specific areas to put pads to stop any metal from rattling. I'll keep everyone posted.

Well damn. Mine is only quiet when in tilt or open position. Still hoping whatever you come up with works for mine. If so it'll be the best mod I've done to my car, by far.

Do you happen to have some tire shine (gel preferably)? I've tried 3 different types of lubricants and none resolved the issue, but I'm going to try the Meguiars High Endurance Tire Gel that CK-19 GT2 suggested to see if it does anything at all. If it doesn't work, I'll use it on my tires (as long as it doesn't sling)...lol.

I have some Meguiars Hot Shine but it's pretty thin. I can't imagine it would provide more lubricity than the Shin eTsu grease I lathered all over everything.

You're right. I can easily put silicone based tire shine on the perimeter of the sunroof glass where there's plastic and on the rubber seals and I will get zero noise for around 2 months straight when I'm not continually appling it during washes. my noises also aren't that bad with the clattering of metal that everybody else complains about. I live in South Florida tho so yes it's hot. I work for a Kia dealership here and we're looking into a fix for everyone as we speak. I'll get back by Friday with what we figure out.

I use the silicone tire shine we use in our detail department. its purple and thick. It works perfectly for me. I suggest the Maguires because it's purple as well and very thick so I assume it's almost the same. our service department closed at 5 so the mechanics left and they got busy towards the end of the day, but tomorrow when I get in we'll get right back to work.

I tried to replicate that on my personal vehicle. I push up on my sunroof and it does not make that noise. it makes a rattle slightly when I hit bumps (mine isn't really that bad tho) I'm pretty sure I know why. I believe it's the windscreen that comes up when the sunroof is open rattling on the front edge of the sunroof I'm going to put pads there now and see if it stops it.

That actually makes sense. I hadn't thought of that bring a possible problem.

I just reapplied a LIBERAL amount is Shine eTsu grease to mine and still no difference.

And you did the main seal around the tracks, the seals to the sides and front on the gloss black and the back roof, and around the sunroof glass itself sides front and back?

I found the issue with my sunroof. The rail that the glass rides on has a protrusion coming down. I think it's a foot for the sunroof to rest on. It's circled in the below pic.



Now, the sunroof housing has a cutout where that foot meets when the glass is closed. It can be seen circled in the below pic.



When the roof is closed those two peices are bumping against each other causing this noise.

In the next video I'm pushing down on the glass to replicate the clattering sound.

In this video I just shot the noise is gone. I'm pushing down hard enough to squeeze water out of the rag I was using to clean up the grease job I'd just done to the sunroof.

So while it may not be the same for everyone, that's my fix. Unfortunately there's so much grease applied to my rail I couldn't get the felt to stay put permanently. This weekend I'll clean it up and find something more appropriate to apply.

I'm going to create a separate thread so anyone with the same rattle as me can find the fix easier.

Nice work. It's really hard to see the bottom side of the sunroof glass and I totally missed this when trying to figure it out. I have tons of double sided this and that for various car things, I'll try applying some to see if it helps me too.

I think the fact that my noise persists with the glass vented, if this is actually the problem, could be due to the alignment of the glass and the roof, that portion might still be in contact with the glass vented where yours might have come apart just enough to not be touching. I guess we'll find out.

*Edit* That protrusion might actually serve two purposes, if it is the one I think it is, it is the stopper that meets the area you circled, but it also pushes down the wind deflector. If you look at the wear marks on your wind deflector, they stop right where that indent is on the tracks, like it stops right in that groove.

I had some felt tape that I just stuck in there to see what happens. The amount of grease I have all over made it not stick of course. I just held it in place and had my son close the glass over it.

I think I'm going to try to put a line of waterproof silicone on it this weekend.

Luckily I never use my sunroof so whatever I stick in there should do the trick as long as it remains closed. I was thinking of using one of the little bumpers that go on cabinet doors to stop them from slamming buy that might be too thick and make the glass misaligned.
