Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof

And to continue my post about starting a proper tug of war regarding getting the sunroof assembly changed to a new one, this is what my sunroof sounded after coming from the dealership and my 30 000km service, where they could not replicate the issue because they tried to replicate it after the car had been indoors for 2 hours. This is what it sounded like after it had been in outside temperatures for 45 minutes..

I think a key point to talk about with this issue is that it is temp/sun/expansion/contraction related and not the surface of the road (which is usually what causes sunroof rattles or noises). Yours is worse than mine, but I had almost no noise for the first year+ of ownership. It is degrading quickly as something ages/hardens/loosens. I am sure they will all end-up sounding like yours eventually.

Yeah, it is definetly expansion & contraction related which mainly comes from the temperature but I also see a strong correlation with humidity.
My car is only 17 months old and the video is actually a very loud version that hasn't really replicated itself ever since that day last week (or been THIS loud before). Loosening the bolts & removing a few helped for a while but it progressively got worse.
The dealership until now was completely convinced that it is a road / surface related issue therefore using non silicon based lubricants for the seals etc would help. Last tuesday the dealership warranty guy took it for a drive after the maintenance done in-doors in a warm room and said he could not replicate it, I did not have time on the same day to go back and pick him up but did so the next day and then he just concluded that there is a clear issue and he also now understands the strong temperature & moisture correlation.

Ooooh that's BAD! GRRR...it makes me mad that they returned it to you in that state.

It appears that any issue we want them to fix we need to take them for a drive first and identify it. I won't be just leaving my car anymore.

That’s horrendous.

I'd lose my shit if my car sounded like that. I've posted before that I also have a popping/sticking noise when the car is sitting in the sun, but it's nothing like that. Mine is not emanating from the sunroof, it seems to be something above the headliner. If I push up on the headliner right by the driver grab handle, it goes away. THAT noise would drive me insane.

Funny thing is that it was this loud just this one specific time after it returned from them, normally its a few levels quieter but still can be loud. I've found that fully opening the roof and then closing it a few minutes after normally helps reduce a fair bit of the noise anyway.

We shouldn't need to be doing such things to reduce this problem. There shouldn't be a problem full stop.

My car has been back at Kia since Monday for another sunroof fix (as you know) and I just got an email from the dealership saying they have ordered roof rails for it and I need to wait for another week. I have also been dealing with Kia Head Office who have not been very helpful, and just keep telling me to direct queries to my dealership pretty much, as they are the ones working on the car. I think they misunderstand that I contacted them to complain about how many times I have had the car in to get this issue fixed (or, more likely, they are deflecting attention away from themselves).

The response from Kia HO seems pretty poor considering your issues.
To tell you to go back to the dealer that is the cause of your issue is not good.
It’s Kia HO who should be talking to the dealer telling them to get their act together.

A known world wide issue and no real fix is totally unacceptable.
Kia recently gave "Carexpert" a Night Sky to review and he commented on the sunroof noise. Kia HO playing dumb about it is total BS. FFS its a Kia, not a Jeep!!!

Totally agree, Kia playing dumb on this issue is not a good PR exercise.
BTW my daughter is in her 2nd Grand Cherokee with trouble free motoring...:)

Are you really surprised by their response though? I'm not.

And my last car WAS a Jeep!

Mine was a lemon. Looks like I might have bought another. I could open a fruit and veg shop if this continues.
Then you're well experienced to deal with such matters ;)

No I’m not surprised, just a little disappointed in their lack of action.

To @FitR6 my situation was very similar. I had gone to the dealer on 4 occasions for the sunroof. It would have been more, but my roof was relatively quiet in winter which lasts pretty much 6 months here, so I had a limited window to look at fixing it. My noises started at 3 months, or at least that's when I first noticed it. The first time around they [partially] pulled down the headliner, applied some padding and whatnot, no remedy. The subsequent 2 visits resulted in some type of work, none of which remedied the problem. I made a bit of a stink (but like you tried my best to remain calm and collected) for the 4th visit. I demanded that they take a better look and I referred to the earlier posts here, including WestcoastGT's full sunroof replacement. Initially I was told by their lead customer service rep (in lieu of their manager who was away) that they would replace the entire sunroof assembly, but if it did not work they would not do any further work, and if this replacement caused any other noises they would also not address any of those. Needless to say I got their manager on the line and said this is completely unacceptable warranty practice. I had the manager himself ride with me in the car, and like all prior visits with their lead mechanic, he also heard and acknowledged the noises. They did some "investigation" on the 4th trip, where they also tested another car on the lot which also had a noisy sunroof, called into corporate, and corporate deemed it normal and not willing to repair since another car on the lot did it and returned my car. Needless to say this was the last straw for me, and then when the car was hit in January and subsequently repaired, that's why I got rid of it, I considered it a lost cause, I was not happy with it.

I do genuinely hope Kia gets to the bottom of this and some owners see reprieve. I was the most disappointed in myself that I mainly purchased the Stinger because I had expected more of Kia's purported "halo car" which had issues that were seemingly unresolvable. I had some kind of thought that since there was a special Kia Stinger hotline, the car would get the attention it deserved, and that the 5 year warranty would cover every issue I had, which I told the sales people before I bought the car that I will nit-pick every nuisance on the car and they said "that's fine, we will make sure you are satisfied." I left the car and brand woefully unsatisfied, which is a shame because other than my nit-picks, the car was actually pretty damn good.

FWIW, I am still very happy in my change to the M240i, I have next to no complaints so far, and I sure hope it stays that way otherwise my next vehicle might be public transit, better for my sanity lol. I don't mention this because I think any more highly of BMW than Kia, I just want to say I'm glad I didn't move into another massive disappointment, just rather a bit of an overpriced yet very fun vehicle with [so far] satisfactory quality.

Wow, reading that made me angry! To say that those issues are "normal" is to admit there is a fault with the car. I, like you, also erroneously thought that the warranty (7 years here) would ensure that any issues would be satisfactorily taken care of. I love the car for the most part, but when it starts creaking like it does it greatly diminishes the driving experience, and makes the car feel cheap. I hope you continue to experience satisfaction in your present vehicle.
