Cold air intake causing stuttering

Hi everybody,

I drive a 2021 Kia stinger GT and recently I’ve been getting a lot of problems while accelerating. I keep getting thrown into limp mode and I assumed it was something with my tune. I use a JB4 with the BMS cold air intakes. I have HKS BOVs as well. I took all my mods off and reverted back to stock and it seemed to fix everything. I wanted to put mods on one by one to figure out what the problem was coming from. The first thing I put on was the cold air intakes and nothing else. Immediately the car is stuttering on acceleration. Does anybody know what could be causing this? Any ideas or questions feel free to ask me. Thanks.

Very odd, the BMS intakes would've been my last guess of what could be causing the issue. What are you running for spark plugs?

Sounds like they where not installed properly, check your clamps!

Could spark plugs cause the problem with only the intakes installed? I’d imagine it would cause a problem even with the stock intakes. I have the HKS plugs that were gapped to the JB4 specs when it was installed.

Well not much can go wrong with the intake install which is why I asked about the plugs. I'd check the vacuume line to ensure its secure and not twisted or something and check all your clamps. You could also try resetting your battery but Im stumped if none of that works and you have hesitation from a simple intake.

Could this have anything to do with the line connected to the oil catch can?

If any of the vacuum lines are crimped or disconnected it can cause lots of issues.

Checked all vacuum lines and took out the oil catch can. Still having issues. I’ll look into the spark plugs next. Other than that I’m out of ideas.

@Rodtheviking had boost issues because of the boost control valve and upgraded to a Pierburg controller from a Porsche.

I’m not a big fan of part swapping to troubleshoot, but he may be able to shed some more light, plus the part isn’t too expensive.

I ran intake, BOV's, intercooler and exhaust on stock gap plugs and didn't have any issues until I got to high RPMS, 5k plus. I switched over to a Pierburg switch over valve and no more stuttering. I ran into this with a Volvo S60R that I had tuned, they were known to eat boost control valves too, so I knew what was going on. Its an easy swap and if it doesn't work send it back to Amazon. The factory one is really only good for about 16-17 lbs, at higher boost it just cant hold very well.

Here is a place that sells a kit, I just made my own.

Couple of options:

Direct swap.

Not direct swap, you have to make an adaptor.

Is the direct fit one just plug and play I don’t have to do anything else besides reconnect all the lines?

You may have broken a coil(s) or spark plug(s) before and it is intermittent. Have you tried to read codes?

I can only get a code to come on if I turn on the tune for an overboost code. I’ve taken everything off and it still has the same problem just can’t get a CE light to come on.

I've had a similar problem with broken coils. Once I got a random misfire code (P0300) they replaced 3 coils. Problem was gone when I re-installed the JB4.

I’ll look into that. Thanks!

It is plug and play. Check coils first though.
