The quiet fishing town of Ísafjörður, Iceland now has one of the snazzier pedestrian crosswalks you’re likely to encounter: a traditional set of white zebra-stripes painted to appear three dimensional. The piece was created last month as part of a collaboration between street painting firm Vegi GÍH and the city’s environmental commissioner Ralf Trylla. The city hopes the piece serves both as an artwork and as a stronger visual cue that convinces motorists to slow at the crosswalk. See more in Iceland Magazine. (via Jeroen Apers, Swissmiss)

While interesting and could possibly do some good, I would rather see good 3D art in a parking lot, wall, canvas, etc. I can see so many more accidents because a driver thought something was actually in the road and swerved to avoid it. To be honest, at least it seems this way to me, most pedestrian accidents are not necessarily because of inattentive drivers but because of inattentive pedestrians. The rule of law favors the pedestrian but that does not just give pedestrians the right to step out in front of traffic, crosswalk or not and expect the car to stop on a dime. The car wins every time.

Seems like a cool idea but it would only serve its purpose for a year or so. Once people got used to them they would be just as oblivious as they are now.

This is what they need:

Now THAT is pretty damn neat! I wouldn't mind those in a few places around town. I can see 2 downfalls. One is, "Great, I just washed my car, too". The other is, how visible are they during daylight hours, or would they just run them at night?

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
The water only runs when the stop sign is active so the car wash thing wouldn't be a huge deal. Not sure what they look like in the light all the videos I've seen where at night.

Yeah, try keeping a car clean here in MN. Winter is impossible, which by the way has already started here. Blizzard all day. Snow and salt stuck to your car constantly. Even if you take it to the car wash by the time I drive the 3 miles back home it's covered in salt again.
