So has anyone with a base GT thought about swapping their 7" touchscreen for the 8"? There's quite a few floating around online from scrapped/wrecked Stingers and while I can't confirm the plugs are a direct swap for fitment, it appears that way...
I’ve so wanted to do that. From what I thought I’ve read is that you still have to take the car back to the dealership to have the new display “programmed” to the car. I could have read fake news though.

It's feasible but we won't know until someone buys a 8" screen and goes for it. lol.
Since it's larger, its possible it could be running a higher resolution, which if that's the case, would explain why the car would need to be "coded" for the bigger display.
I'm also looking into upgrading the 3.5" black/white instrument cluster for the 7" supervision. There is a guide in the DIY seciton for it and it's plug 'n play to a point. Using that display will require coding to turn off certain functions that don't exist in the base GT like the adaptive suspension. Otherwise I think you'd get an error or warning of a malfunction for your non-existent adaptive suspension.
I was under the impression the head unit would also have to be changed. From what the dealership told me they dont have a way to flash new software and firm ware onto the installed head unit.
this is something I am wondering, for when the 10" screen from the telluride finally makes its way to the stinger. I have the 8" now. there appears to be enough room up there for the 10, given that it has much thinner bezels than the existing 8".
the 8" screen really doesn't add much functionality to the 7", honestly probably not worth the time unless you get one off ebay cheap. you could always re-sell if it doesn't work. I would check the pinouts on both to make sure- just because the plugs FIT doesn't mean they're the same pinouts.
Yeah, I was going to do it but then couldn't find enough info on it and I didn't want to be the "pioneer" to pave the way. lol.
I also had aspirations of changing out the center LCD in the gauge cluster to the larger color unit but lost interest as well. Honestly, none of it adds much functionality. It just 'looks' pretty or 'better'.
As for the 10" infotainment display that's arriving in the 2021's... that most certainly will be running different software. With the new screen real estate, formatting will be different to take advantage of it.
I still suspect the 7" and 8" displays could be plug 'n play "hot swappable".
there's only one pinout in the service manual, so you might be correct on the hot swap. I honestly don't see much difference between the two displays, so it could work. if not, pop it back on ebay where you got it...

Yeah. The 8" just has a cleaner 'appearance' and gives the interior a more polished look. The 7" has massive bulging, gloss black bezels on the side that look tacky IMO. The 8" has a matte finish with smaller bezels that are flush with the LCD itself. The 7" screen is recessed and really just doesn't fit with the upscale interior as it has this budget, after thought design. lol. Same could be said for the black and white center LCD in the gauge cluster. At least they could have added some nicer graphics... ANY graphics lol. My wifes '16 Sorento EX-T has the same LCD but with actual graphics and animated fonts, which feels more upscale.
Honestly, it's all trivial stuff and only important if you're trying to impress your BMW, Mercedes, and Audi friends.

I haven't seen the LCD gauge cluster screen in person but I would imagine that's a much bigger upgrade than swapping out the center touch screen. I would think that one is actually worth it and I thought it was actually plug and play, but I could be wrong.
I hope they integrate the 10" screen into the dash, I'm not a huge fan of the stuck on look. Not a deal breaker though.

It's been done and there is a thread around here showing what it took. So it's sort of plug 'n play. It'll work but being that GT trims don't have the adjustable suspension and a few other things, it'll throw some warnings/error dash lights. However, it can be "coded" or reprogrammed by a Kia service department that doesn't mind participating in your Stinger mods. Obviously not all service centers are as friendly. The thread did provide instructions to a willing technician with the right scan tool though. Then there is the issue with matching the odometer, which you currently can't do. So you'd have to buy a LCD cluster that has higher mileage than yours and 'drive' your way up to it before swapping. That'd be the only ethically right thing to do. lol.

I wonder do you have to take out the entire dash to get to it or can it just be removed from the top while the dash remains in the car?
I'm am in the process of doing this. Mostly on the FB groups for updates. So far, the pin out is mostly the same. 2 wires are different on the lvds cable. When I plugged the 8" in it turns on but no touch function. Couldn't get dealer to confirm if firmware is needed. Makes no sense why it would being that the pins are the same just different in order. You need a different dash trim also.

I’ve been following your videos. Very informative. I even tried accessing the engineering mode. I thought that was really cool, even though there was nothing I could actually do.
