CARPLAY2air

You are bold. More power to you. Can’t wait to see how it works. If it does work, the big downside is there’s always that chance Apple changes something in an update and renders this unusable. We will hit that road later.

Also, Seems to be the same unit as this with a different logo.

I figured this. I saw a video for the same brand as your link, the video is exactly the same as the one posted by the OP, just stating a different brand.

So does that mean the touchscreen will not work?
I meant more of what's required on the infotainment itself. I doubt this does anything special with the infotainment, just has WiFi Direct so it transmits carplay wirelessly to the dongle, then the dongle does it wired to the infotainment. The infotainment just thinks there's a wired iPhone plugged in, it doesn't know any better.

Your Da Man...

I'm pretty confident with my theory. Once you received the dongle, you will have to go into the OEM Hidden menu to install the *.apk. Then from there, the wireless features would be released. Please do post the direction if they provide any. Please do keep us all posted.
How do you access this menu?

Alright, it came in today (DHL shipping is amazing).

Everything pretty much works as expected. It functions exactly as I thought it would. It initiates a carplay connection over the wire then connects WiFi Direct to the iphone. It runs its own kind of "mirroring" software that displays the wireless carplay connection on the infotainment. All of the steering wheel functions work as expected.

There is a bit of delay in function recognition with the phone, but I imagine this is mainly a product of the wireless nature of CarPlay, given that the song *itself* changes almost immediately on the screen, but the audio has about a 750ms delay to start the next track. Even if it had it built in, I suspect the delay would still be there. There's a noticeable delay from when I say something on a phone call to when the other person responds. It *might* get a bit annoying for some, but I can deal with it.

Overall I'm happy. No wires, finally I can go back to using Waze again.

Thanks for the review! Did you buy directly from their website or an Amazon vendor?

That was fast. How much trouble would it be for a video turning on CarPlay and connecting it and playing a song or maps?

Interesting. Following for more information.

I agree that a video would be fantastic.

I've recently started to think that Bluetooth, at least with my Galaxy S8, is not quite the quality I thought since I tried plugging in Android Auto today, it sounded better. If this unit functions over wifi, there might be more bandwidth than Bluetooth, giving the sound quality I expect.

I can try and get something together at some point, no promises as to when though.

Unfortunately, I don't think this supports Android Auto over wifi. This just adds support for adding Android Auto to some infotainments that don't ship from the factory with it.

So expanding on my previous comment, the delay is actually fairly noticeable when you're talking to someone *else* with a delay, like in a car as well. It's manageable, so if it's causing you issues just let the person on the other end know and you should be OK. If you talk to people in the car a lot, you may be annoyed by it.

Regarding a video, I can't actually get a video showing the audio latency because the camera stops recording on my iPhone since it needs to utilize the audio engine for what ever is producing audio. I can get a video of it connecting if you'd really want it, but it's just a simple wait for about 10-15 seconds and it'll end up connecting. What would speed it up (at least it did for me) was removing the bluetooth connection from the car/phone. That makes it so the CarPlay module is the only thing connecting to the phone.

Did you order Carplay2Air or Carlinkit?

Did you have to install any software to the head unit or was it plug and play? I’m looking to order one of these soon as well.

That was what I was getting too but wanted to make sure. I imagine it is just a case of the seller prioritizing Carplay as apple/iphones are seen as the more popular choice. I can't imagine an AA version won't be out eventually

I hope so. I could go into a rant about this issue but this isn't a smartphone forum so I'll spare everyone.:D

Carplay2Air. I imagine these are the same product, just rebranded.

So this will or will not work to provide wireless Android Auto?

This won't work with wireless Android Auto. Nothing works with wireless Android Auto.

You want to blame someone? Blame Google.

They only introduced support *this year* at I/O (formally, it was announced many years ago), and it's only compatible with certain Samsung Galaxy devices, and in no cars right now.

Carplay2Air. I imagine these are the same product, just rebranded.

Just to confirm - with your Carplay2Air, there was no .pak file to install to your head unit via USB, right?
Carlinkit says it requires the file install, no idea if that’s even possible with our cars.

Correct. Was just plug and play.

That being said, I've decided that this isn't for me. The audio delay with phone calls is a bit too much for me. I do talk on the phone in the car quite a bit, so this isn't really going to work. If you just want it for stuff like Waze/Google Maps and music, this is great.

I kind of don't want to deal with returning it, so I'm offering anyone here in the US if they'd like to buy it off me for a heavily discounted price. PM me if anyone is interested.
