Hi all,

New 2018 GT owner here, very excited to join the community. Used the search and didn't find anything on this-

The GT I bought was from Arkansas, I'm in NJ and purchased in NJ. Upon plugging in my iPhone and trying to use Waze/Maps, it was showing me in Arkansas. I read some other models of cars have had issues where the head unit sends GPS info to the phone, causing the mismatch/issue. Anyone have a similar problem? Not sure why my car would think it's still in Arkansas. Thanks!

Huh, I never experienced this with my base GT without it's own navigation. However, I did have a rental car recently, a base Challenger. When I would plug in my phone to the car and use carplay, it would put me in Los Angeles, I was in Phoenix at the time. If I disconnected and used blue tooth, it was correct.. The only time I've ever experienced that.

My phone does Waze/Maps just fine when not plugged in. I read that Carplay trusts the head unit's GPS over the phone's when connected via USB. My Stinger is a base GT, so no built in Nav but i'm assuming it still has a GPS receptor.

I also can't seem to set my clock either, the option is greyed out. Also my AM/FM signal is horrible. It sounds like I will need to take it to a dealership.

Can't help with Carplay issues but for the clock make sure you don't have it set to "GPS Time" (if that's a thing on a base GT?).

Never heard of the phone using external GPS, mine certainly hasn't ever.

I'd also be very surprised if a US car had a GPS receiver if it doesn't have nav.

Leave your phone connected and in a place with GPS signal for about 10min.
The nature of GPS has some ambiguous parts of the code that are only transmitted eveey couple of minutes. It may take a few cycles for it to lock properly.
Most modern GPS recievers make assumptions to provide a quick solution, but if the assumption is wrong, it will resolve to a very wrong location.

I actually can't even get into Date/Time settings. It is just straight up grayed out. Not near my car at the moment so I can't take a picture.

As for the GPS issue.. many threads on Apple's website indicate that the GPS signal actually is from the head unit, I'm too new of a member to post a link but it's there. It's also happened to multiple phones I've plugged in.

It's also way too coincidental that my iPhone thinks I'm in Little Rock, Arkansas and that is where my Stinger was transported to NJ from. I'm going to end up going to the dealership here anyways probably tomorrow, I'll report back once I figure it out. Appreciate the responses so far!

Well, live and learn. Thx for the info - I looked it up and sure enough, this is a common occurrence. Seems like opinions are divided between it being a head-unit issue or a phone/software issue. It appears if the head-unit has CarPlay, it is required to have GPS receiver even if it doesn't provide navigation services.

I agree that it is awfully coincidental that it shows that location. Like it had GPS info and then something stopped working.

$5 says the dealer blames the phone.

Sitting in the waiting area.. explained to the main service guy, fine we will take a look at it, grabs a tech...

First words out of his mouth after I show him my GPS on the car and also the phone in Arkansas upon plugging it in: "Did you try updating your phone"

:( Gonna be a long wait, methinks

To be fair - most mechanics didn't sign up to become IT specialists.. Personally, I expect decent competence in MECHANICal things / troubleshooting / labor from my mechanic. I work in software development, so I know how many ways things can go wrong in the field, and I agree that it *SHOULD* work, but, updating the phone and rebooting it is probably the first thing I'd try myself, given that it's the easiest possible fix that just might work..

I hear you man, I’ve got a software development background as well but now work in Corporate IT so telling people to turn it off and turn it back on is commonplace, definitely appreciate the help and direction. I think as cars become more technologically advanced we are going to see the guys and gals in the Service Departments either having to become familiar with the tech or even have a dedicated tech person or department.

The dealer basically threw their hands up and said come back next Tuesday, I said fine as this is more of a quality of life issue than anything else, again I’ll report back to this post in case someone finds themselves in a similar predicament.

Here’s basically proof it’s the car - here’s a picture of me calling roadside assistance, without my phone plugged in, which also gives you estimated Lat/Long of your location. Punching those coordinates into something like latlong.net will place you in Arkansas, while I am physically located in NJ

You’ve probably tried it, but at this point I’d disconnect the battery for a few minutes

Yep I tried that too :(

This might be a dumb question.. the GPS antenna would probably need some sort of power to work.. anyone have an idea if it can be a blown fuse? I looked at the fuse labels online, and nothing seems to be descriptive enough to tell which one would be linked up to the GPS antenna, if any.

I would guess it's powered by the head unit.

My initial thought (once I had researched based on your reply) was that it might be "stuck" based on last known GPS location.

Nobody else has reported that here, so I wonder if it's a software glitch unique to Stingers without NAV? There must be thousands around the world. I wonder how many are AA vs. CarPlay?

The fact that the display screen is greyed out too is most puzzling

So just to clarify it is just the option for Date/Time which is grayed out, not the entire screen.

Similar to another thread that was posted on these forums, but sounds like that guy's came back naturally.

And you have no friend with an iPhone who can test their phone with your CarPlay? That would rule out the phone or car real quick.

I've tried with both my wife's iPhone and my dad's as well as my own. The phone is ruled out - the fact that calling roadside services yielded the Arkansas Lat/Long coordinates as well as me doing that whole Park Minder thing in UVO also shows that my Stinger is parked in Arkansas. What eflyguy said makes the most sense that the GPS is stuck.

The other thing though that I noticed today was that my Sirius XM connection says "Antenna Disconnected". I think that connection is the shark fin up top on the roof. If that is also the GPS receiver (makes sense, Sirius is satellite radio), and the fin is basically dead, then I think we found the culprit.
