Bye bye Stinger

It’s good your ok, you have a hard list to pick from.

See if you can hang out for the 2020 stinger and see if that orange vehicle is more than just a myth?

Thanks folks! You know, I'm sort of thinking about switching to a used car and just wait until the facelift to get back in or until summer when the incentives get better. Then I'm seeing some decent lease incentives on some other brands which I could get into and wait for the facelift. Took a second spin in the K900 and man that thing is sweet, would be nice to get the stinger to ride that way while still remaining sporty. The Volvo is down on power but is a nice ride if a bit firm in R-Design trim but I love the seats. This all got me thinking of a used G80, too bad no sport around used at a good deal.

It’s AWD. This was more an issue of the tire than the drivetrain.

Drove a K900’s, Stinger RWD and a 2019 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design. The Volvo was actually quieter than the Stinger and closer to the K900! The power delivery was good but no where close to the 3.3T engines however, the car was quite nimble and the handling impressive. The RWD was fun too but the lack of heated steering wheel will keep me from getting one. I could live with the K900, it’s plenty quick as is and handles well for its size, I was quite surprised by this. The surprising thing was that the K900 looks like it has a sport suspension, about 2 finger should fit between tire and wheel well, the Stinger has a bigger gap than the K900.

I have to admit I like the K900 more than I expected, based on my initial, brief drive. If I can find a good deal on one, I’ll probably go that way. The search goes on.
Wayner: so glad that you were not injured!
From the pics, that's a lot of snow for the DC area, right? You say it was a tire issue. We're you running the OEM tires?

With his car dead, Wayne might not pick this up really soon, so I'll answer for him: both of us opted for the Nitto Motivo UHP A/S to get us through the winter. He said after the accident that he had discovered "the weakness in these tires": which he then described as leading up to his accident. I chimed in that pushing for the limits will get you into trouble with A/S in the snow, imho. And since Wayne's accident, I have been even more careful to maintain distances and feel my way through the corners: i.e. driving as I have always done, accident free, for decades on A/S in the snow. AWD makes acceleration and not getting stuck in the first place a much better proposition, but it is not going to turn this car into some kind of high performer on A/S when the roads are crap. Just go steady and slow down.

Thanks, I was using the Nitto Motivo AS tires. They had no problem going during the snow storm, but stopping is where the issue came in. The predicted weather change vastly in a few hours, was to be 3” but by Saturday morning it was said to be 4-6”. When this occurred we already had about 6” on Saturday night and it was colder as well. Just a bad combo all around.

I’ll add that the iciness of the partially plowed road that was pretty much made things worse than just driving in snow that was not plowed. Snow tires would have fared a lot better in this weather. The only non snow tire that I have used that performs well in this kind of stuff was Pirelli’s P7 AS+. When I first used them it was during a period of Polar Vortex when we had icy road after snow fall and the lemon tires just slid in about every situation. The P7 AS+ performed like snow tires on the Optima, they were just great. The weather in this region has been getting worse each year, with more snowfall colder temps than when I moved here 20+ years ago. I’ll have to get some better tires for the winter.

Yes, when conditions are marginal, there's no substitute for winter tires.

Sorry to hear about the car, but glad to hear that you're ok. Hope you get into something you enjoy soon!

Soooo..... you had the unfortunate misgiving to test out whether or not your Kia Stinger was engineered well enough to save your hide when things went wrong.... you walk away unharmed...and now you’re looking elsewhere for a replacement. My opinion, I’d rethink that. Stinger = awesome design / fun / comfortable / SAFE. That’s a win in my book. Glad you are AOK! db

I'm not blaming the car at all, it did it's job well to keep me safe by sacrificing itself. Maybe someone at the body shop will buy it out and get it repaired at a lower cost or she will end up being sold for parts. I'll keep looking up the VIN later to see where she ends up. Oh, I want another Stinger but this is just e doing what I normally do and check out the competition since I'm in the market again. Of the others I drove so far, the K900 (with similar engine) is the one that sways me the most, with it's luxury trappings and equipment level for the price, plus feeling nimbe for a large car, that makes it fun in a different sort of way. The fact that the deals are that great at this point and a lack of inventory that haven't had stuff added to raise the price is putting me off of going that route now.

The wife on the other hand is a cheerleader for the "no more Stinger" camp. At this point in the game, I won't get a great deal like I did on the 2018. Heck the way it looks right now, I might just get her the Volvo she wants me to get, take back the Optima hybrid (it's lowered and still rides comfortable, while handles better) and drive it until the price gets better on the Stinger and then trade it for another. She'll be happy, I'll get back into one when the deal is great and the "fear" in her has worn off.

so many cars , so little time , change is always good ! Get something different and keep us posted !!

I'm hoping to visit a Hyundai/Genesis dealer later today once this headache wears off. I have my mind on something with the 3.3T engine and nothing else out there is going to give me value for money like Genesis/Hyundai/KIA products.

Precisely the reason I've never really got on it with the significant other in the car lol! She has no idea how fast it is, it's really hard to tell when you're just driving it normally in comfort mode.

Amen. The beauty of this car, is how easy it is to drive in a civilized manner. I feel like it's a very mature car, and when it's in Comfort Mode, I tend to drive slower than everyone else, yet I don't mind because of all the luxurious comforts.
It's a different mindset, a luxurious one. In lesser cars, I felt the need to constantly run 'em ragged, and put 'em away wet. Always revving high and pedal to the metal. Now that I know I have all that extra gutso on tap, I can finally relax. I finally don't have anything to "prove", you know what I'm saying?

Then, you switch it on over to that Sport Mode, and you've awaken the Kraiken. An entirely different character, ready to rumble with the best. I've turned off the main-screen's animations for switching modes. Now it only shows a quick notifier on my driver's dash, so passengers aren't aware of how much I play with its modes. Keep the passengers unaware of what's happening behind the scenes.

That's my driving mindset to a T.
