BMS intake install help!

Good afternoon everyone! So my BMS intake will be arriving Wednesday and I am very excited. Ive been watching some videos and the install does not look hard, but i know very little about working on cars and have no tools whatsoever. Just wondering what all tools I need to have for this and any tips you legends might have.
 
Buy a amazon basics socket set its like 50$ comes with everything you need for basic tinkering.
 
I highly recommend you have someone do the install for you, or someone more experienced be around for you to turn to if you try doing it because I wouldn't consider installing these intakes easy. If you don't have experience working on cars, you will struggle with some seemingly simple but challenging steps like removing the hoses from their ports, such as the hoses going in to the turbos. The videos always makes things look easier than they actually are bc the people recording the videos are usually more experienced working on cars.

You will need more than a socket set to do a job like this. Along with a socket set with 12mm to get at the 2 chassis braces, you need pliers to get at hose clamps, a phillips screwdriver, a flat-head screwdriver and a good memory to keep track of how hoses go back on position-wise, and the diff size clamps and where they fit on to.

Frankly my BMS intakes were some of the easiest things I've done (3.3TT for clarification). If you plan on trying to learn so you can do more things in the future, it's a great and easy starting point.

There's one vac line clamped on the driverside which as stated and just be released with any old set of pliers.

Then just the two standard hose clamps, the 4 bolts for the braces, and a couple other bolts to remove and then replace with the heat sheilds.

So basically if you don't feel comfortable doing this intake install, don't plan on doing anything else on the car yourself besides some eBay logo sticker applications.

If you want to try to learn, this is a great mod to start with.

Yes that's what i thinking. This specific intake seems to be the least difficult from the ones I've looked into. I feel I can get this done

Alright just walked out to my car to double check the intakes. All you'll need is:

  • 8mm socket for the clamps on the BMS provided filters
  • 10mm socket for the clamps on the OEM intake tubes and heat shield bolts
  • A good length extension for the heat shield bolts certainly makes it easier
  • 12mm for the 4 bolts holding the braces on
  • A pair of pliers/channel locks to get the one vac hose off/back on the driver side intake tube.
You can sub in a screwdriver for the sockets on the hose clamps but I recommend sockets just to get into tighter spaces easier.

Just remember if you're new to it that these pipes don't handle boost so don't crank em til they break. Just snug the clamps down and you'll be fine.

Also the filters on this intake do rest on the braces. There may be a way to make that not happen but it's kind of a non factor so don't spend hours trying to get them not to make contact.
 
Add a hose removal tool to the list. Trust me it will make the hose removal MUCH easier. Especially for the BOV tube. Been there done that.
 
Fortunately the BOV/RCV hoses don't need removed on the BMS intake. Just a much smaller "Breather Hose" as lazily named by the FSM.

Totally agree hose pliers make hose removal much easier but if you're trying to keep expenditures down on startup tools, they won't be necessary on the BMS install just helpful.breatherHose.webp
