Alberta Stingers Check In

If the weather shapes up this weekend, I'm considering shooting some photos. Anyone want some nice shots of their Stinger in/around Edmonton? I haven't picked a location yet but I'll try to think up something good. If not this weekend, sometime soon, for sure.

My last shoot I did, buddy's car, whenever that crazy forest fire smoke engulfed Edmonton for about a week:

If I don’t have to work, sure.

I saw 4 Stingers doing runs at Castrol this last Friday (one was parked in the lot, white, I checked and it wasn't my old one haha). All of them were having a terrible time, lots of low 14's and high 13's. Best I saw (maybe he did better later) was 13.21, and I heard he has a bit more than just a tune. My best on Map 2 with intakes only was 13.19, so maybe I was right on par, and maybe Castrol is just a terribly slow track. DA was about 3700ft on my best runs, ran a 12.71 in the M240i myself. It's no faster than the Stinger, but it launches so much harder, you can actually feel boost build in launch control.

I ran there a few weekends back at 3600 DA with map2, intakes and secondary deletes and couldn't get below 13.4@106. The car feels sooooooo much faster but holy crap is it a pig out if the hole. Granted I have a few people looking into why my time was so bad. Cause it shouldn't have been. Other stock stingers were faster than I was.

The fastest stinger time from this weekend was a 12.75@ 112 I think. He's using the bms water meth kit. He will likely be able to get it a bit lower still.

I did not see that run. I heard the blue one had meth, so yes that must have been him. Best I saw him run was 13.21, but I only stayed til about 9:45 and didn't see everyone's run from staging lanes. My best in the Stinger last year was 13.19s @ 107.5mph with Petro 94, JB4 Map 2, Denso plugs and DIY intakes, ~4000 DA IIRC.

Looking at that time for the meth kit Stinger, his is weak off the line too. I posted 12.7166 @ 106.3mph in the M240i with a ~1.8s 60ft, so clearly the M240 gets off the line way harder, but that Stinger has more power once on the move. I know there is brake snip and whatnot, but it would have been nice if Kia didn't have such a weak launch control, so much potential if it was around 3K launch and built some boost. Probably too much risk with warranty pushing a launch that hard.

Debating the JB4 @ Map 2, but I read that due to elevation and our terrible fuel options I might only see 30-40 horse. What are your experiences with it up here? Worth the cost?

Even on Shell 91 octane, there is a noticeable difference from stock when running Map 2. I laughed hysterically the first time I launched it, I felt the back end squat for the first time when running map 2 lol. Run map 2 for a couple months, then pull the box to go to the dealer, it feels slow as hell lol.

So thats a tough one. As far as feel goes its hands down a better experience. The car pulls sooo hard. Makes more boost and all. Feels so fast. Buuutttttt........
In my experience that doesn't translate to faster 1/4 mile times here for some reason, I'm in the process of trying to figure out why that is and ill keep you all updated. But it'll be a slow process as its not exactly at the top of my list.

All comes down to whats important to you. I'm running 94 in mine all the time. And haven't found any problems with fuel issues. Our fuel is usually better than most states. Petro and chevron 94.

Found the thread I was referencing, apparently according to Terry @ BMS, Shell 91 is our best option even when compared to Petro/Chevron 94: Canadian Stingers with JB4 - What fuel?

Could be related to what you're experiencing re: 1/4 mile. I will definitely consider the JB4 now though having heard your experiences.

I was stuck out of town else I would've been there too. Two have JB4's, blue one has a BMS meth kit. He's still working out the ins and outs of it. We're finding out how bad our fuel is.

For anyone in Alberta we've got a FB group, had a couple small meetups so far.

I'm curious on the findings once known. I'm convinced fuel here isn't great. Even on cool days I felt my logs could be stronger, USA Stingers seemed to be getting stronger ignition values consistently at similar altitudes and climates. I'd like throw a JB4 or at least a JB+ on my M240i, but if the fuel can't support it fully, I don't see the point. Sure, it'll run harder, but I don't feel good about pushing the limits on questionable octane regularly.

For most of the group the JB4's aren't making much difference so far. For me map 2 with Shell 91 still has a bit of ignition pull according to the logs.

I was in the same boat, ignition values just weren't stellar and I could never get an indicated 0-60 under 5 seconds under any circumstance according the to JB4, but I never tested that against Dragy or other means. I will say the car felt a ton faster with Map 1 and 2 though under normal driving, just couldn't get drag strip numbers in the 12s.

My thoughts exactly. Feels soo much faster. I has some logs reviewed by Terry late last week. Map2 running chevron 94. He said the logs looked good. No timing issues.

I've gotten 4.8's on dragy stock. Car does feel like it pulls harder on the top on map 1 and 2, but between rain and work the one chance I had to do some tests it was so cloudy dragy couldn't connect to any satellites.

I want to get down to Castrol and grab 20 liters of AFD's 98 octane fuel and try a couple map3+ runs.

Sell that BMW and come back to the club;)

The M240 has too much for me to like, it's just the right size, number of doors, exciting to drive and quality is good so far. Just so expensive and missing out on some tech...oh well. Maybe down the road if HKG puts out something comparable, I'll take a look. Right now I'm digging the smaller car thing. We have an SUV already for bigger hauls.

Speaking of small cars, I saw a video for the refreshed 2020 Honda S660. I could get into that, in that green color haha. Looks like a hoot.

They need to give the world a new S2000.

I’m the one with meth haha! I haven’t been able to get back to Castrol yet.
But I got new wheels!

What was your best time? I heard 12.7 or 12.8? What fuel are you normally running? I know you probably have some tweaking to do, but I expected faster for Map 7 and meth. I'm genuinely starting to think there is something up with Canadian Stingers being a bit slower, or just the fact that Castrol seems to make cars slower than they should be...maybe it's uphill lmao.
