Took that car in to dealership Friday last week. Obviously didn't expect to get car back until this week. Oil change, brake resurfacing <.< and to check out some noises. Turns out there might have been an issue with some aftermarket wheels and tires I had got from tirerack. I guess the tires were rubbing the shocks. Not sure if there was any damage done to it but I thought tirerack was pretty decent with nailing down proper fitment?

I started noticing sounds and the handling behavior has changed quite a bit. The car is a 2018 and has always been a little squirly on higher speed turns. Now the car bobbles over small bumps. It feels like something is wrong. Dealership emailed me this morning. I guess the place I used to have my OE summers mounted were idiots and the OE Lug Nuts were not put on with the OE wheels. They put the skinnier aftermarket lug nuts that came with the set of wheels and tires from tirerack. Well after I get the dealership the lugs they can diagnose any issues with suspension or if the idiots put the tires on facing wrong direction. At least they put the correct stagger to the front and back. I didn't see any obvious indicator on the wheels showing direction of tread though.

Here is hoping nothing is messed up. I want my car back. This past weekend was pretty nice sunny weather and I missed having my car.

Hey, if the those guys caught the difference between OEM lug nuts and the aftermarket lug nuts, I'd say that is a good indicator of their level of savvy. Good! Get your wheels from a dedicated wheel and tire shop. I guess that my opinion of Tire Rack has taken a big hit. Your story is not a good one! I trusted Big O to find out if the Nitto Motivo UHP A/S tires the same size as the OE Michelins would fit; that worked out okay; but I didn't stick with Big O when it came time to invest in wheels for summer/fair season driving. I went with the local pros. They spent an hour or more looking up wheels for me online as I talked about their search results and made up my mind on the spot. I knew they'd stand behind their work. Will Tire Rack? Have you tried yet? There should be ZERO touching under any driving styles/conditions.

I have had an amazing experience with this dealership so far. Quick enough, not the best at communicating progress but they do not question any issues I have. Brake shudder issue was taken care of twice with no questions. They turned the rotors but now I will be putting on aftermarket pads when I get them back. Trim was replaced and painted with no issues.

So i'm still waiting to hear back from dealership on if there is an issue with fitment and if it actually caused damage to the shocks. They were rubbing on that only and scraped it up some. After I hear back from them I will contact Tirerack and ask them about fitment issues with the wheels and tires I got from them. I believe I even got an email from one of their "fitment experts" mentioning how the wheel and tire package was a good fit for my car. Unless the car had something done to it before I owned it that wasn't communicated to me when I bought it. It was used with 6000 miles on it.

I guess I will find out at some point today or tomorrow.

That's the size of the OEM 18's. What's the offset?

I was actually thinking myself it could of been a problem with the offset. I honestly don't know much about it and that is why I chose tirerack as they had the option to search for wheels based on cars to eliminate any issue with fitment.

The offset is +40mm

The real question is, why was this not mentioned by tirerack of requirement or even that these tire and wheel combination did not fit. Is that a+5mm on all 4 corners?

Do you really believe mass market sellers test and verify everything they sell?

Well I did as I actually got a phone call following my purchase from tirerack from a "fitment expert" on how they would fit fine on my vehicle.

That offset is ~1/4" closer to the strut than stock. I noticed when I had my car jacked up that the stock wheels are quite close to the strut from the factory. I would imagine a 1/4" closer would make them basically touching depending on you alignment (camber) settings.

That said a 5mm spacer should fix it. Just be careful there is enough thread engagement on the lugs.

Contact Tire Rack and see if they'd be willing to work something out with you...like some money back to purchase some spacers. It's unlikely, but worth a shot.

The OEM 18's are +34mm. You should be able to throw some 5mm spacers on there and be ok.
I don't know about the 5 mm space are not enough hub left for the wheel to sit on

I was just going to mention that +40 will be way too close in the front. The back will be fine.

Just looked, he has 8" wide wheels.
They shouldn't cause issues at +40 I had issues at +35 because mine are 9-1/2" wide.

Seems fishy. I wonder if he got what he ordered offset wise or if there is some other cause.

19x8.5 +40 puts the front wheel almost 1/2" closer to the strut than stock. I would think your wheel is precious close to the strut.

I do believe wheel diameter matters on this car as the strut slopes away from the hub so larger wheels should gain strut clearance.

Still waiting to hear back from dealership if any damage was caused to the shock or if it was just a little rubbing.
