Hey guys,

I was on browsing around on Youtube for modified Stingers and came across this video that shows OpenPilot in action for the Stinger. Thought I'd share it with you guys.

I keep meaning to pull the trigger on Comma.ai/OpenPilot. It would be especially excellent for long drives on the interstate. I just haven't had the motivation to spend the money.

In all fairness, I'm also bored to tears driving on the interstate or in the city. The only time I can thoroughly enjoy driving is when I'm out on a country road by myself.

Gotta agree, driving in stop & go traffic is boring with the beast chained down. The guy driving might be a tester too so it does get quite boring when doing repetitive stuff.

Yeup, I tend to drive back & forth from Philly to NYC, this would definitely help on the NJ Turnpike.

I’ve been trying to figure out if this actually works for a 2020 GT1. There seems to be a lot of mixed info, even on the actual site. Some things say the Stinger isn’t supported, but then they’ll still let you buy the appropriate harness, etc. Anybody know for sure what’s going on with this?

Hmmm for me the Stinger is a fun powerful car, 99% of the time I wouldn't want a computer drive this beast. Would have bought a boring Tesla Model 3 or a fugly Prius. :)
 
For the folks who are trying to figure out Stinger and OP (openpilot) and comma.ai stuff, I would like to share my recent experiences with you, and my personal opinions, hope that helps ('19 GT2 AWD)

comma.ai is the company who is providing the hardware, so you can order a device (expect a customized mobile phone basically, battery removed, integrated panda -car communication box- added, IR camera for driver monitoring, etc.) and hyundai-c harness package (that fits into the LKA camera slot for stinger).

openpilot is the open source software you need to install through git hub, once you get the device and install it to your car, but officially stinger is not supported out of the box, or by the company comma.ai. Instead there is a HKG hyundai-kia-genesis community, that provides custom forks out of the core software, and Tunder, the guy in the video, has built one and shared it, so you can install his version into the device, which is optimized for gt2's variable steering and other parameters. He is also a stinger owner and keeps tweaking the software, which is the greatest part. (special thanks!) there are also other HKG community editions, you can install whichever you want, so that is the meaning of community supported.

Comma.ai has a very dedicated discord channel, so you can find all the answers to your questions if you run into problems installing software or running the code. With that being said, it would be more realistic to say this is not a final plug-and-play, no problem, consumer software yet; for kia stinger specifically, but if you are not scared of codes and command lines, you will feel it is such a breeze to install. I run some problems for the first time, device not recognizing the stinger, then I follow some advice from the community and it worked out.

Driving experience is something I want to share briefly too. OP engages with your cruise control, so it is not full time control. and it only controls the steering wheel, the car manages throttle and you as a driver basically. It is nowhere near autonomous, but to make things clear it is such a good addition to help steering assistance on the car, so there is no nagging, "keep your hands on steering wheel warning" constantly. Software handles that part very well. You still need to look at the road because of the eye tracking and system disengages if you are distracted. Level 2 ADAS. (What am I gonna do with my both hands free now is kind of a good question, probably will hold two coffee cups at the same time while driving now! joking : )

Upgraded from optima, I am already a big fan of the stock steering assist on looong interstate driving, day and night, but annoyed with the nagging, so this is a nice addition and comfort to me. I also like experiencing tech gadgets, having an AI powered autopilot, so it is a win-win. And I am always in control of the car, override anytime, and even toggle off openpilot and drive the way I want, gives more confidence. There is always a safe margin for error, improvisation of the road by the software, sometimes ping-pongs the steering wheel, so I am policing the ai behavior while driving too.

Again, if you are into tech and love long distance driving coast-to-coast, you can give it a try, and I am sure you will love it.

If you just want to bypass the stock steering assist nagging (It nags even with my hands on the wheel...), there are modules you can import from Korea that piggyback on the LKAS for ~$150 + S&H.

It's not as advanced as something like comma, but it might be a cheap and good enough option for now. It works great on the freeway, and integrates nicely with the steering wheel buttons.

Do you have this one installed? I looked at a few threads pertaining to these modules. There were so many comments, replies, etc, it was a little hard to navigate and come away with solid information. Was this one of the ones that was a little hard to track down for ordering? If not, would you happen to have a link of where I can get it?

I have it installed with the AVM module (it lets you operate the camera while driving, and optionally have the left and right cameras turn on automatically when using the turn signal).

If you want to order either it's best to contact Shark Racing directly and ask for a quote with shipping, they are not normally stocked items.

Would you mind posting pictures of the cameras while driving and the turn signal camera please ?

A switch on the circuit board enables or disables the turn signal function. If the function is on, the left or right camera will fire up when you use the associated turn signal above a certain speed. Turning the turn signal off or pressing the cancel button on the steering wheel will turn the camera off.

If cruise control isn't turned on, the cruise control up and down buttons cycles through the camera modes at any speed. Cancel will immediately stop the camera, or it times out after a little bit (20 seconds?).

Edit: The only quirks I have noticed are that if you turn a camera on, then turn on cruise, the camera will stay on until you exit cruise. You want to make sure the camera is off before entering cruise.

Also, by default, your stereo volume will drop whenever you turn on a camera. This gets annoying if you have the camera turn on every time you use a turn signal. This volume control feature can be turned off in your car options, but be aware it turns it off for backing up too.

#3 the split screen - is it me or you cant really tell much - I know the camera are the way they are but maybe they weren't mounted in those position to be use for the turn signal camera.

I would probably use the #1 as I find it cool you can just cycling through all the cameras while driving
 
The downward facing camera isn't ideally positioned, but it can be handy in tight spots or corners to make sure you don't curb a wheel.

Does anyone know what fork he is using for the comma2?
 
As mentioned, that is Tunder, the guy that maintains the Tunder fork, and his handle is Tunder.

I'm curious if this implements a better LKAS algorithm. The stock stinger will follow narrow lanes without cut lines or other issues pretty well, but it'll swerve off to the left or right if one of the paint lines swerves off (e.g. adding a lane to the left or an exit to the right). Very annoying.
Better than my wife's '20 Subaru. That thing literally ping-pongs inside the lane and gets worse as it goes until it flings itself out of the lane.
