I had the AFE intakes since last year. I don't find maintenance to be hard. Sure, there are extra steps due to the airbox but it's not difficult. I also run the intakes without the airbox plugs in. Making the intakes semi enclosed because have a cold air take really doesn't matter since our cars are turbocharged (the turbos will heat the air) and overall more air is more useful. You'll still get a lot of heat shielding and air funneling when running semi enclosed while being able to intake more air than a fully closed off system. I also take the time to check the turbo fins for any damage when swapping out the dirty filters for clean filters (I recommend buying 2 sets of filters, that way you can just swap them out).
