Advice regarding cabin noise

A question related to the fake engine sound feature discussed...Does the 2.0L have this as well?

Not in our 2.0L which comes with the 9 speaker system. There are 2.0L variants which have the Harmon Kardon system so those might have the noise cancelling feature.

My experience between the 2.0T GT Line and GT 3.3 V6 in Singapore there is a difference in external noises especially in regards to traffic passing by as the 3.3 V6 comes with double pane side windows in the front versus single pane on 2.0T models here. In fact I find the 3.3 V6 is abit too muted from external noises.... only noise you hear is from the tyres and stone hitting the panels lol.....cannot confirm on the noise cancellation from the audio system though.

Yes, it's interesting the different opinions on this subject. Some are complaining that the exhaust is too quiet. Others pay big money for louder pipes. Some of us use the car as a long distance GT driver, others like to squeal tires, still others turn the stereo up. Interesting that Kia even considered the exhaust sound by allowing users to adjust the exhaust note in the cabin via the radio.

Good to know that no fake sounds are pumped through the base 2.0. I actually like less sound/cabin noise, especially from a 4 cylinder. This is great news to me.

You can turn them off in the 3.3T trim models. I don't want a loud drone in my head for hours on end on long road trips listening to the stereo -- kid stuff or track tuning.

What is "them?" There is no off-switch for the fake engine sound, only a minimize. There is no control for active sound reduction or any indication the car is equipped with it. There is also little to no effect of changing the fake engine sound setting on North American cars.

Agreed. The only possible way I can think of to turn it off would be to disconnect the speakers.

Wrong pronoun -- "it" not them. The artificial exhaust note is a function of two things. One is the three level settings in the Settings menu. Minimize is the default and seems to be off to me. I drive almost always in Comfort mode. When switching to Sport, the exhaust note is noticeably louder under load, even with "minimize" default setting, which suggests that it is also tied to the drive mode. I don't know if you can turn it completely "off" or not, but it would stand to reason that in comfort mode and "minimize" that the sound would not be amplified. It is not addressed in either the owner's manual or the AV manual.

People keep saying "fake engine sound". It isn't fake, it is allowed or restricted. I don't know how it is done. But the engine sound is real. It's like the difference of having noise reducers on and barely hearing things in a room; taking them off allows unrestricted noise. The Singer's engine sound is masked or uninhibited, not fake.

The fake engine sounds are an option in the car settings under the Custom drive mode menu. As discussed, it is not clear how or if this affects things in the other drive modes.

I know how you select the three options for engine cabin sound. What I don't know is how the car lets in more noise or less noise; the technical aspects.

Neither. It plays fake sound through the stereo speakers. Same as BMW and several others.

It’s not .. it’s a fake sound ....it’s like turning the volume up on your music

The sound is actually digitize base on the drive mode selected. Hear ours are based on Euro specs which mean no customization of engine sound and in comfort the engine is distant and muted and in sports its amplified. I can concur that as there is no exhaust valve and the engine is actually pretty quiet once you get to operating temperature. They probably tune it this way as it was meant to be a GT car and having pops and bangs will be a mismatch in a GT type of car. However a slightly deeper exhaust note without the pops and bangs is a welcome for me.

Try getting someone to rev while you stick your head in the engine bay you will notice its actually not producing much noises except mechanical. Even the induction noise is pretty muted. There is no physical pipe in like Ford ST or RS to bring the engine note in too.

A faked and enhanced engine sound in a cabin that is given sound dampening material to keep interfering noises out? That's just plain stupid. Who comes up with these things?

Lol... easy way of making a car sound good. Currently even big players like Audi, BMW and Merc does they even in their RS,S, AMG and M models. Sad but true. Having 1 platform but different sensation of performance. Really "clever" of them.

I am for lobotomizing the whole thing. If my cabin is sound dampened enough to keep the engine noise to a minimum, I don't want it "piped in", not even "minimized" ferpetesakes!
