A few inches of clear film on rear door/quarter panel: accessory PPF or OEM shipping protection?

Hi all,

I just picked up a 2021 GT and found some peculiar looking film on the rear door and quarter panel. On one side, the two pieces are badly misaligned (picture), and on the other, there is a piece on the door but not the quarter panel. Lighting conditions make the picture look worse than in person--it's fairly transparent.

Do the cars ship with this?

Has anyone safely removed this, and if so, how?

Thanks all. Good to be back.

its supposed to be there. high impact area for pebbles and debris. But I'm not sure why yours is so opaque. Mine is nearly invisible.

Standard factory fit for stone protection however there are usually 3 pieces on each side.

I took mine off, didn't really care for the look. In 3000 miles they started to lose match with the paint. I assumed they were related to shipping because the quality of the vinyl wasn't the best.

If they *really* cared about protecting the car from rocks, they should clear bra the entire front of the car from the factory. ;)

Thanks all.

The camera and conditions (humid night) make it look worse in the picture than in person. My problem is that the passenger side is badly misaligned, and the driver side has only one piece. When I do my first paint correction, it will probably stand out more.

Thanks for the picture. Yours seem to be aligned very well, where mine are completely wonky--not to mention incomplete on both sides.

I think I should go ahead and remove them from mine as well. I can only assume the dealer started to do so and then gave up for some reason, since I have only one piece on the driver side and two misaligned pieces on the passenger side.

Did you do anything special to remove them--heat, goo gone, etc.?

They peeled right off. Might be a good idea use some goo gone after to remove any residue. After a car wash there's no indication they were ever there.

Lol. Same question asked every few months. I didn't ask, because I hadn't found the forum yet; and I peeled off the passenger side, then changed my mind; ordered the passenger side three pieces and put them back on (almost $50 shipped; don't peel them off). I don't see the misalignment that you're talking about; but that is definitely a weird pic with the two top pieces looking "fogged"; never seen that before.

Thanks. I actually will be tackling this with a steamer, which is how I've removed window tint in the past and saw some videos on YT using a steamer for ppf. I'll have Goo Gone standing by for any residue.

If you want to replace it, this may be the part you want....

Cool, and thanks for the connect to this merchant.

Misalignment: the piece on the left is at least a quarter inch higher than the piece on the right. Also with the piece on the left, the bottom edge is not parallel to the body seam right below it. Seems really pronounced to me.

It's doubtful that I'll be leaving it on there, as it's bound to really show up when I do my first paint correction and ceramic or hybrid seal, especially with the misalignment. Deep glossy paint surrounding crooked cloudy plastic--no thanks. In fact, preserving it--and having to work around it--would probably be a major headache when using a DA polisher.

Also, I wonder if the dealer messed with them, maybe even removed and replaced pieces, leading to a bit of "lift" that shows up as fog in the lighting conditions where I took the picture, the missing pieces, and the misalignment.

Curiously, I only have about 70 miles on the car and haven't driven in wet weather yet, but I do see some faint splashing in the area--but most of the marks are in front of the PPF, right on the paint. Even if I replace these later, I'm expecting to get nicked up back there.

I probably would have left them for now if mine were installed as clean as yours.

Thanks again all.

I don't have any nicks around those pieces in c. three years. Interestingly, as I was going over my car with a touchup pen only a few weeks in, I saw a black speck right in the middle of those three pieces, on the driver's side: something had hit that acute high point and gone right to the black plastic: I put a dab of Silky Silver on it and that was that. I thought at the time that I'd probably be touching up right there, between the plastic patches, and wondered why the most prominent spot was unprotected: but it hasn't occurred.

I think that you're right: the dealer removed those pieces then decided to put them back on: what else could explain fogging? These are supposed to be as clear and invisible as PPF anywhere else. Mine still are, even the ones I put on myself to replace my silly mistake of removing them in the first place. By the way, they just peeled off, nice and slowly. I started at one edge and got it lifted with finger nails, then gripped it and pulled back steady, low and slow.

For the record, I used a $12 garment steamer from Amazon and removal was a breeze. I definitely recommend looking into this method for anyone who wants to minimize possible damage to the paint or clear coat and avoid adhesive residue. I also pulled at a low angle (not perpendicular), per advice I found online.

To get started, before steaming I pulled up a corner on the funkiest/cloudiest piece I had, which allowed me to gauge the adhesion strength. My best guess is the steam reduced the effort by a factor of 3 or 4 and there was no noticeable residue left behind. The product was almost able to slide off harmlessly.

If you try this, make sure to keep the wand moving--don't cook the paint or your fingers.

I did end up leaving the lowest piece (side skirt) on both sides for now--turns out they were there all along. I'm not going to worry about the ~8 square inches that I ended up uncovering on each side. However, I am going with RokBlokz and mesh for the vents.

Don't want to start up a new thread on this, but I recently purchased a preowned Stinger and the rear PPF edges are very dirty... any ideas how to clean? it seems as if dirt has been getting under them. At this point I'm not sure if I just need to remove and replace them.

I took mine off because it was dirty all around the edges in the adhesive after only a year and 2k miles. The dealer refused to warranty it so off it came.

That looks worse than bad. The bottom piece was not put on properly: the edges have lifted and let dirt accumulate. The darkened edges of the top pieces look like they could be scrubbed clean with a toothbrush: worth a try. You should be able to get the piece/part number of that bottom piece online: memory is spotty, but I seem to remember looking all three up online and picking a company to buy from at random: it worked out.

Curious to know if any of you who have removed these PPF pieces have noticed any... wear... tear... chipping... as a result?

If it is dirty like that, just take it off.
