It’s on again – less than six months ago we put the 2018 Kia Stinger 330Si up against the Aussie-built 2018 Holden Commodore SS-V Redline, and the results were surprising.

In that test, the Kia Stinger blew us away with its performance and standard level of equipment. So much so that we gave it the win by a nose over the Australian favourite.

Fast-forward to today and it’s the same test, but with a very, very different Commodore.

I kept my Holden-built '05 Pontiac GTO LS2 to keep the Red Baron company in the garage. Both my Holden cars were (are) exceptional.....but so is my Stinger.

The Australian Stinger has Continental ContiSport Contact 5 summer tires. The US gets Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires.

Compared to the Regal GS The Commodore VXR has a 10mm lower suspension and 20" wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires. The Regal GS has a softer suspension and 19" wheels with Continental ProContact TX all season tires.

Acceleration between the Commodore VXR and Regal GS should be similar, but the GS should be worse in braking and handling.

Video Comparison Results:

Acceleration 0-62mph / 1/4 mile:
Stinger: 4.8 sec / 12.8 sec at 110 mph
Commodore: 6.2 sec / 14.1 sec at 99 mph

Braking 62-0mph:
Stinger: 2.7 sec in 37.8 meters (124 ft)
Commodore: 2.6 sec in 36 meters (118 ft)

Slalom:
Stinger: 21.96 sec
Commodore: 21.56 sec (with transmission issues - kept coming out of gear at the turn around)

Skidpad:
Stinger: 0.93g
Commodore: 1.03g

Well as an Aussie what can I say, I can tell you most Holden guys I know now say Holden is dead since manufacturing stopped, GM should have rebranded all dealerships as Chevrolet, killed the commodore name & moved on this would have been more acceptable to the Holden diehards. The new Opel was realeased to market here in February, just announced on the radio this past Saturday that Holden’s February Sales were the worst for 70 years, says it all, GM management must be so proud of themselves. Just in closing, went on a run yesterday & the meeting place was opposite a Holden Dealership, now sitting there closed & totally empty lot devoid of cars, the saga continues & it will sadly be a slow & painful death....thank you GM for your loyalty & suppport you gave to Australia.....”NOT”

I've posted this elsewhere, so forgive me for repeating, but my two Holden-built cars were absolutely perfect. My G8 which I traded for my Stinger had 192,000 miles on it and no wrench had ever been on it other than one trunk-release solenoid under warranty, batteries, tires, fluids and filters. Still as tight and quiet when I traded it as new, no oil leaks, perfect mechanical condition. Awesome car and it took the likes of a Stinger (and my wife) to convince me it was time to trade it. I'm still mourning that.

My GTO is the old Blue Goat that is keeping the Red Baron Stinger company in the garage. At 97,000 miles it did need a new clutch slave cylinder but only batteries, tires, fluids and filters otherwise. It's still a fun car to drive (LS2 400HP 6-speed RWD w/ LSD)

So sorry, Australia. I was a GM Service Manager for about 10 years and a GM Master Technician back in the '80's so I've been a GM buyer and a Pontiac fan. GM lost me. They still build good cars but they are mundane, boring, ubiquitous grocery haulers now (like Kia started out being) that don't speak to me any longer (other than the Corvette which is a completely different division.)
