2018 GT Stinger AWD V6 (25K miles) needs starter replaced - over 2K! (reposted from Reddit)

I don't know enough to counter over the phone, most of it sounds like jibberish to me anyways "well we need to take the flim-flam out to access the triangulation cube and the lubricating nugget" so will have to settle for 2-3 fewer labor hours you saved me. Tried calling a few local mechanics and most didn't answer; the two who did had never seen a stinger in their shop and recommended I stay the course with the dealer.
Well, that sucks. I got it. You have a car you can't drive, sitting at dealership already. Even if you find another shop, it will cost you another 2-300 for towing. At least, they lowered the price a little. Still, have no idea, why it's 7-8 hours. By looking at manual it's really 3-4 hours. And I think, I'm being very generous here.

Really appreciate your help though. While it does suck, I'm feeling a lot better about the situation now that I've had more time to sit with it. I'll just consider myself lucky I was able to buy a base GT AWD back when it had the V6 and list was just under $42K. Absolutely nothing on the market now with the same price/performance and features.

Dang, that's a lot for a base gt. 42k was what the gt2 was going for. I paid 36k for mine brand new.

Probably didn’t negotiate well but I did get awd and other add ons like lane assist
You paid MSRP at the time, can't complain because some individuals get handed an unbelievable deal. $36K for a GT2 brand new in 2018? Sorry for everybody else. That's the only deal like that on the planet. And the GT2 was not "going for $42K" back then either, that is ten thousand below MSRP.

I meant to say gt1, not gt2. GT2 was going for 45k. I coulda bought a black on black on for that price, anyways.......

This was in 2020, when they had all the incentives going. He has a base awd gt, which is what I have. I paid well below what he paid 36k otd. The dealership I bought mine from works on volume, they're priced well below anybody, thousands of dollars. They were the cheapest place to buy from at that time. I remember when the C8 came out, at the time they were selling base C8 for MSRP when literally everybody else had mark-up on the car.

They sell Chevy, Dodge and Kia at the same place somehow.

New car factory warranty is provided by the factory. The agent is the dealer. Whatever the dealer can claim back from the factory is what they will provide to the customer. If it is out of warranty the dealer can't do much. Either do it for free and lose or charge YOU.

The price of a new genuine starter is close to AUD$1000. USD$650. I think I saw where the the replacement time is 3.9 hours so the dealer was having a guess.

Expect to pay about double the component cost so USD$1200 @$150 an hour labor.

You should get 12 months manufacturers warranty and labor on a replacement part.

I am so glad I bought the 8/200k extended warranty for my GTLtd. Reading about the Oil pressure sensor replacement costs and now the starter replacement cost, I fell a little more at ease.

Luckily for me back in 2020 during COVID days, just as everything was opening back up I picked up my 2020 GTLtd for just under $43K CDN/$33KUS. After taxes and extended warranty it was just under $51K CDN/$38K US. And I got Kia Connect for 5yrs

Posted the same thing on r/StingerGt earlier, but wanted to see if this group had any similar experiences or advice:

I've been driving my Stinger for the last 5.5 years without issue except for needing new spark plugs the first year of ownership.

City driving mostly, lots of starting/stopping, short trips milage-wise.... Only have 25K miles total on the car, but still get regular maintenance/inspections and oil changes 2-3 times each year.

Well, two days ago, my car wouldn't start. I hoped it was a battery issue, but after a couple of attempts at jumping it, I had to get it towed back to the dealership for diagnosis.

Just got off the phone with the Kia tech who says the problem is with the starter and it's only covered by the 5-year warranty (not 10-year powertrain) and I'm about 6 months too late and not covered.

The part itself isn't too expensive, but Kia dealer says it will take about 10 hours of labor since the starter is located under the engine, so basically, they need to take the drivetrain apart/replace starter/put it all back together for $2,200 not including tax.

Shouldn't the starter generally last 10 years/100K miles? Anyone else out there with the same issue?

Anyone have luck with Kia Corporate paying for an out-of-warranty repair for something like this?

As for the auto start/stop "feature", I will be disabling it EVERY time I drive the car moving forward....
my start is funny sometimes especially if i don’t keep the start button held full start up. idk my girlfriend says something about it but warm starts and even cold it seems fine, but something tells me it’ll need to be replaced under warranty too.
