3.3TT 20/80 water /meth vs VP Racing Speed Sauce Plus

I'm currently FBO and running WMI with the JB4. I recently came across an article about VPRacing Speed Sauce Plus. It's a premix 20/80 water / ethanol instead of the conventional methanol. I've always mixed my own using VPRacing M1 & distilled water. Would this be ok to run instead of 20/80 water/meth I normally run, and would it make that much of a difference?

Well there is a place 1 minute from my house that sell this stuff so I will try it out since I am on the last gallon of boost juice. I will let you know how it goes

Yes, Please let me know... I've never used boost juice before. I've always mixed my own with VP Racing M1 20/80 by volume.

I have done the mixing as well but got lazy and just went with the Boost Juice. The place I ordered from has to order from VP so will be a week or so before I can pick it up

Scientifically, it should be more potent...

One liter of ethanol releases 21.1 MJ in combustion, a liter of methanol 15.8 MJ and a liter of gasoline approximately 32.6 MJ.

Just swapped over to the VP Racing speed Sauce. Did some comparisons to Boost juice..did runs on 2 separate days following the same route (cold start, to same stretch of road) with similar ambient temps. There is no noticeable difference between the boost juice and the speed sauce. Cooling was still impressive, dropping IAT by 20 degrees over a 3 through 4 pull, similar to methanol, an no noticeable difference in timing.

My guess is if you normally run methanol with 70/30 methanol/water mix this speed sauce will not be better. But for an off the shelf mix, it seems good

They also claim less corrosive as well, so there's that

I can get this stuff from a shop 3 blocks from my home, saves on shipping. So for a daily mix this will be good and I will run this for a few months to see if there are any issues

Ok dumb question. I thought the main reason for methanol + water mix was that the cooling effects outweighed the much lower energy density. But if 80% ethanol + 20% water is a good enough substitute, wouldn't 80-85% ethanol + 15-20% gasoline (ie E85) have pretty much the same benefits, but at lower cost and no need for a separate fuel system?

Is there any remaining advantage to WMI over CPI at that point?

I think you meant 80% methanol + 20% water.

Ethanol has a slight cooling advantage over gasoline. Methanol has a higher cooling effect than ethanol. Water has the highest cooling potential for the weight, but offers no anti-knock properties.

The issue is cost. Ethanol is cheaper to produce and easier to store. The downside is the hydroscopic nature. So, storing it compared to methanol is not ideal.

If you could tune for pure distilled water, it would have the best cooling effect for weight and cost.

Ah, gotcha.

Yeah, it comes down to cost. CPI flows all the time whereas WMI hits at a preset PSI. As for filling the methanol tank with E85, yeah, you will increase octane rating but the cooling will be terrible compared to water blend. Generally speaking, lowering the temp is safer than hotter burning fuel.
