Hi, I definitely want the 3.3L but is it worth the additional investment for AWD? In AWD model, can you switch to rear-wheel drive only if want to? Any views on performance etc?? Thx in advance members

You can't switch to RWD only.
But its a rear biased AWD system so it does send more power to the rear. If you want RWD, buy RWD.

In the winter time in my area AWD .

I've owned a rwd sedan. The hyundai genesis 3.8v6 it pushes about 311 hp nothing special.

I just as of yesterday got a Kia Stinger gt awd and I'll say without any bias towards rwd or awd trhe difference is quite noticeable. I feel basically stuck to the ground with the Awd

Granted the cars are not comparible in performance but the difference is quite apparent when turning at higher speeds, accelerating, I hit some rain and tested out taking off (no slippage) which was a common thing with my rwd in snow and rain.

Not to sway your decision this is just my experience. Realize it's hard for me to give a good opinion about rwd on this because I had it on a significantly larger and slower car

Three advantages to RWD, IMHO.
1) $2,000 cheaper
2) better for drifting since 100% on rear wheels
3) 170 pounds lighter than AWD. Whether that helps or hurts 0-60 times is still up for debate because the AWD's traction makes up for the weight. What I'm seeing is that there is probably more difference between cars than drive trains.

If you live where you encounter snow or wet conditions, you'll be extremely happy with this car's AWD performance. I need to do a road trip writeup, but I did a long trip that included a few hours of snow and icy road conditions. Even with summer tires this car is planted and impressive. And, I didn't have to put chains on the car.

The downsides are as noted above, it all depends on what you want and need. For me, AWD is well worth it.

Thank you to all for feedback.... as I live in Middle East where it rains twice a year and drifting is a big thing, I think it’s RWD;). Thanks for your help and happy driving...

Be aware that unless you get the GT2 (or equivalent) the RWD may not be available with LSD. Don't know if that matters to you or not. Check it first. Your models are different than ours.

I ski. So AWD. Not that Canadians had a choice...

I got the V6 with AWD because we get snow and rain here.

Regarding RWD bias, I believe in sport mode the car sends 80% of the power to the rear wheels. Not too shabby.

It never rains in England so I’m happy with my RWD...

I've owned a couple of awd "sports" cars, and as much fun as you can have with rwd, awd really allows you to drive hard in less than perfect conditions, and easily embarrass mustangs and camaros and the like. More importantly, however, it produces a handling setup that gives you a lot more control and confidence - with moderate understeer that can be easily controlled by throttle.

I've also driven high performance rwd and awd cars on racetracks, and despite the insane power levels, the awd cars had the same feel as the ones I owned.

You can still break the rear end of the awd Stinger free if desired (I did it easily on both test drives), and also turn off the nanny features for even more thrills (not been able to try that).

I was initially attracted to the idea of rwd, but after considering the above, I think I'll be very happy with the awd.

The AWD GT when using launch control sends 100% power to the rear wheels (or so I've read), so that eliminates any traction advantage off the line.

Through twisties is another discussion...

Have we actually proven that (100% rear in Launch mode ?? ) ............................

Ha, no. I just repeat what I read here. You guys are my knowledge base. I haven't even opened the manual yet.

Pretty certain it's 80% max, by mechanical design, no electronic foolery..

edit: yeah, confirmed. Max 80% to rear, and max 50% to front.

2018 KIA STINGER OVERVIEW

According to Road & Track the RWD GT is .2 seconds quicker to 60 than RWD.

They don't mention how power is routed, only the results of the two cars acceleration test.

I should read the manual.

Theres a reason why Porsche makes the 911's with AWD ..................and its not for snow and rain :whistle::whistle:
