Am I correct in the assumption the 2.5T uses 2 separate coolant loops, one for the intercooler, other for the radiator? I make this assumption based on the fact that there are 2 coolant reservoirs, one with piping going to the radiator, other to the intercooler.

If so, how is the intercooler coolant pumped? Is there a separate small pump someplace?

We have air to air aftercoolers, not water. That’s radiator coolant only.

Edit: wait, now I’m confused! I don’t know the 2.5 at all…

^^Based on?

Water-cooled intercoolers, on the other hand, place the intercooler right next to the engine, shortening the distance the compressed air needs to travel. The turbocharged air is delivered quickly to the cylinder, making the engine more responsive. And of course, it uses water to cool, as the name suggests—and its superior cooling performance allows stable acceleration even in steaming summers or air-thin high altitudes.

*Models with water-cooled intercoolers: Smartstream G2.5 FR T-GDi / G3.5 FR T-GDi

heh, interesting, is it located on the bottom in front of the radiator; as the old intercooler or is it in a different spot?

A bit late now. I'll try to take some more pics of the entire hood area tomorrow. Best I can recall it's near the bottom of the radiator (or in front of).

edit:
Found this in the specs section of the owner's manual. Looks like it is a separate loop.

Edit2: Looked at the sonata nline manual. No such spec mentioned. So maybe theirs is air cooled instead.

I believe that the coolant for the intercooler is pumped by what appears to be an electric water pump mounted to the top of the air to water intercooler. I'll try and include a picture that will hopefully show this. I supercharged my 2015 Civic Si and it uses an electric water pump to pump coolant through a separate circuit through the aftercooler. My civic's setup has a separate heat exchanger/radiator mounted in front to cool that fluid. I haven't followed all the lines on my Stinger yet, but I'd assume they'd use a separate circuit. Not sure if it has any additional heat exchangers hidden away, but I'll take a look once do my first oil change.Stinger intercooler and electric water pump.webp

Finally red coolant.
Pre 2022 Stinger still use old school green coolant.

^^Dexcool? Nooooooooooooo. Hopefully something better.

I poked around a bit under hood to get a better idea how the intercooler is set up.

Novo above is correct about the water pump near the top of the intercooler. It will be highlighted in the pic below.

There appears to be another radiator in front of the primary radiator. It's hard to tell but there appears to be distinct tanks for either. The pic below shows the view near the pass side looking down. The hose with the green squares is one with the label L450 in the 2nd pic coming to/from the pump.

I don't recall where the hose labeled J50 goes to. I believe another fitting on the radiator

Intercooler drain/fill will be fun!!!!!!

Old post but just ran into it. 3 things..
1. will there be an aftermarket improved one?
2. is it possible to route to a cooler coil that can be packed with ice?
3. companies already make kits to pipe the AC Freon through the IC instead of antifreeze. Will we see a kit for this?

It seems the 2.5T is the bastard child here. I would probably expect to see more support for other applications where this engine is used. Maybe something in the genesis lineup?

Air to air heat exchange is actually quite inefficient, which is why the typical intercooler is as large as it is. Even compressed, air molecules are still very far apart, so it's hard to catch one and interact with it to change its energy level (temp). It's why air is such a good insulator.

Using a liquid coolant forced circulated thru a radiator is much more efficient. It also allows for flow and temp regulation... something that open pipe air intercoolers lack.

The downside - and there is always a downside - is complexity and weight. I was surprised at how much heavier the overall weight of the '22 GT-line has increased vs. The 2.0T '21. The Smartstream engine is at another level of sophistication, so the added weight is arguably worth it.
