Hello all,

I've searched to high heaven using all my GoogFu and am just seeking an opinion on how close is too close regarding clearance. I have an older set of OZ Monte Carlos off my Dodge Stealth turbo in 18x8.5 (et30). I pulled a front stock wheel to see if they would fit for winter tires. What kind of clearance does your 18" barrels have compared to these? The wheel went on and spun without issue, but I feel like I couldn't even get a credit card in there which scares the :poop: right out of me. Spoke clearance was no problem.

Also, the tires were 255/40/18's which were less than a finger width from suspension components. I don't plan on running anything that wide as I could see sidewalls getting shredded when flexing. Maybe a 235.

Wheels and brakes are all attached to the same assembly so you should be able to survive on tight tolerances. What those tolerances are though I'm not sure of.

As long as caliper doesn't touch the wheel, you shoud be fine.

The sidewalls don't flex at the top of the wheel... it's not going to shred on the shock.

Thanks for the feedback.

D.J...equally concerned about top and bottom support "brackets" because tire slip angle. I had it happen on my Stealth when I ran some extra wide meats on it. (which oddly, I had this same problem with wheels/Brembo clearance 10 years ago lol) It was fine when sitting/ going straight/ light turns, but hard turns always were met with some not great noise.

Bottom support brackets?
I can't visualize where the concern is.

What was rubbing on your Stealth? Tire to Strut?

Sorry, the part on the shock that's closest to the tire in the pic. There's a "top" and "bottom" protrusion. Those are the secondary concern. First was the "wheel-barrel-to-caliper" clearance. But I think I've convinced myself I'm good after doing like 7 days worth of research on the matter. Just wish others had taken super close up pics as well.

That caliper is *very* close. ""Should Be Just Fine"", but balancing will be a problem. Tire tech will probably put weights on the rim where they'll hit the caliper.

Yeah its a good day out today so I'm going to swap on the spare and see how much clearance that has comparatively.

Post a pic of the spare, for science

I suspect the spare has AMPLE room, but fortunately, I haven't had the pleasure test fitting it

Reminds me of this thread.

So after doing a little more fiddling, I compared the spare to the OZ wheel. Turns out the OZ does not fit. The barrel shape is just to "thick"(?). I turned a few times and heard a scraping noise that was not from the pads/rotors and felt like it was ever so slightly contacting the top of the caliper. The wheel might be out of round a smidge due to age and use though.
The spare fits because at 4" wide, the back side of the rim barely makes it past the front face of the caliper. Although it does look like even at full width, it would be ok. Comparison is below:
