I'm curious what you find out. I dont know if that foam thing is just to prevent potential rattle. I dont think that would block water from rain.

Yes, I see that thin foam as a sound reduction layer. The Stinger has a lot of "padding" to reduce squeaks and rattles. Perhaps it could have used more of that; but we're back to quality and price balancing.

I am wondering if there is a cause and effect with hatch rattle going on here. Do any of you who are seeing insulating foam starting to protrude also have a hatch rattle issue? And if so, is your trim a GT2 or other trim with automatic hatch opener? This should have its own thread; it sure isn't about paint!

Honestly I noticed the insulating piece months ago but didn't think much of it because it wasn't protruding much (noticed it on both sides), if anything I thought it was a little sloppy, no idea it wasn't supposed to look like that, or could be a problem. Whats new is the fact that the panels they're sandwiched between are lifting. Yes my car had the hatch rattle since day 1, the dealership has looked at it a few times, it was after this last time that I noticed this issue. I have a GT1, so no automatic hatch opener.

Yea, Kia has to be careful adding too much padding, or the Stinger would have become a Genesis

My foam also came out...dealer looked confused when i showed them. Took a trim panel remover and i jammed it back in...has not come out or moved since.

PS...jammed = lightly repositioned

This week I noticed an issue where the front RH fender meets the nose assembly above wheel arch. I'll get dealer opinion when I take it in for initial 3k check probably next week. Haven't come across any other paint issues so far. Build 01/2018, Aus compliance 03/2018.

I had exactly the same issue in exactly that same area, RH side on my white car, also from 01/18. And the seemingly common paint chip on the rear edge of the hood on the LH side, which due to it's regular mention on here (and non-interference with the wiper arm) I believe was damage from the build process. Touched both of them up with a bare minimum of paint within a week of getting the car, and haven't run across any other paint flaws anywhere on the body (or picked up ANY paint chips) in the few months since then.

Since then there has been a windshield replacement (non-repairable crack) and a windshield chip repair, so I know the car is getting exposed to flying gravel and road debris.

This thread has basically nixed the Stinger from my list for 2019... not going to buy it unless KIA releases a statement that they have addressed the paint issue or better yet issues a full recall for repaint but holy hell that would be expensive. They probably have insurance for it though.

You really believe that a significant number of Stingers have paint that is bad enough for a recall and respray? What evidence do you believe to support such an assertion? This thread specifically shows (not proves) that the problem is small. So a recall would be pointless. Addressing individual cases is what Kia is doing, other than the Yellow Limited, which is the only "recall" that there is going to be.

You're clearly not reading the data correctly. Of those that have voted, 60% are reporting paint issues, not including the issues with rattles, interior stitching, etc reported on other threads. If you think 60% reporting paint issues is a "small" amount then I don't know what to tell you. What it tells me is that the other 40% can probably expect to have the issues also, they just haven't yet.

Who do you think primarily rates products? The complainers, and/or those with issues who go online searching and find this. Out of thousands of Stingers sold, world-wide, this poll sampling isn't even statistically significant.

However, I think you should definitely buy a different car, a perfect one even (LOL) and save the Stinger for a real fan. Good luck! Buy the way, you won't find a perfect car.

If just Stinger Forum members voted, 3% of 4K members have said "yes" they have paint quality issues. But the poll has been at the very top of Google results worldwide for nearly three months. Anyone searching for their problem would find the poll in two clicks. 214 (today) votes on a poll that is that accessible says "minor problem". So far. The future is unwritten. Obviously you fear the worst. So, buy something else. But don't be annoyed if you get prickly responses when you troll a thread like this.

I get that it sucks to have bought a first model year car with a serious issue and that is the big risk but don't try to convince yourself this isn't a big deal. Nobody in their right mind would buy this car right now if they knew this was affecting even 10% of the cars, you don't spend 35-50k for that. I own a KIA Optima and was set on a 2019 Stinger but the quality issues are not insignificant. Be realistic.

I am curious where the 10% of all Stingers comes from. Did you read the previous posts? I don’t know about being insecure. I am getting full repaint—fully warrantied—and Five grand on top of that, so I’m fine. So long as the car is mechanically strong, I’m happy.

You know they won't be releasing a statement lol

It seems most, if not all, paint issues are from the November build dates. You should be fine buying a 2019 Stinger.

I apologize on behalf of some of my fellow Stinger owners, I get where you're coming from and don't blame you for waiting. I've wanted Kia to admit problems with the other colors too, or at least early builds, but I don't think they will. I'm nearly a year into issues with mine and have started my case over again due to negligence on Kias part. It's true I haven't seen a 2019 in person yet but I'm fairly confident they would have worked these issues out with those, while it seems 2017 builds are the worst (and some early 2018 builds to varying degrees), a 2019 is what I'm shooting for as a replacement (from someone who has the worst Black I've seen) since I don't trust the 2018's at this point (like you), but at the rate my case is going it'll probably be 2020 before I can get a 2019 from Kia

Come on, @zoop makes one comment and gets several similarly defensive ones in return. Doesn't warrant calling them a troll or ganging up on them, which is how it appeared to me when I first read through them all at once. Wasn't the point of the mod renaming this thread to "Discussion" so we could have just that? As far as I can tell that was their first comment on the thread, people in here would do themselves a favor, in my opinion, to not be so quick to jump on someone, because it discourages discussion.

But this is only the googolth-time this conversation has been had on the Internet, so I'll take my leave until I have more information from my upcoming dealership appointment.
