I'm not a mechanic so I am wondering if I caused engine damage. I installed 2 Add W1 oil catch cans on my Stinger. I'm on holidays in the mountains and I started hearing a lot more turbo whoosh. The PCV catch can popped a hose, so apparently I didn't tighten the hose clamp enough. The idle was high when parked and check engine light came on. I put the hose back on, tightened it up and unplugged the battery to clear the code.

There was still some hesitation while driving on the highway but it seemed to clear up after an hour. That was yesterday. Today the hesitation came back with the check engine light, so I bypassed both catch cans and went back to stock.

I have a 3 hour drive home through the mountains tomorrow and was wondering if I caused damage or will possibly cause more issues by driving home tomorrow?

Sorry for your Stinger troubles. Wish I could help. I bought the same cans but have not installed. I am not mechanic savy. Had second thoughts on messing with the engine. Hope someone chimes in to help you. Best of luck my friend.

I want to know things like this. I am no gearhead either. What were hoping for with the mod?

Probably you've just messed up the way the engine works, but it doesn't sound like you've killed it. I'd get it checked out before driving any distances. But that's because, in ignorance, I fear.

Oil catch cans collect the unspent vapors that didn't burnt in the combustion process, instead of being recirculated back into the engine.

Why did you install the cans ???

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
I can't answer what you might or might not have done to your engine, but I'm going to tell you something that will be met with some differing opinions...

A catch can isn't needed on a properly running, brand new engine. The rings seal well enough at this stage, and the car is designed from the factory to meet stringent emissions standards. This means that the amount of actual blow-by gases with gunk in them is so minimal until your car probably has 50-60k miles that you simply don't need catch cans.

So why are people adding them to their modded Stingers? Because they're not only increasing boost which inherently means more air forced past the seal which inherently means more blow-by gases, but because they're also regapping their spark plugs smaller. A smaller gap means slightly less complete combustion in the chamber which means even more blow-by gunk.

If you aren't modded to the point of regapping your spark plugs to a smaller gap, you don't need catch cans until your engine's rings start to lose their seal... which is a very long time from now. No one should be running catch cans, yet, because the vehicle hasn't been in existence long enough to warrant it unless, again, they're modded. Even then, the gunk itself is just nasty looking stuff, but it's not like this stuff actually stops a valve from working... The gunk collecting in the turbo is maybe of more valid concern. But they make intake cleaners for that, and in your case, I'd rather have an intake clean done 50-60k miles from now than risk hoses popping loose during a drive.

Just my $0.02.

I installed them for the intended purpose. I can tinker, do oil changes, etc. I watched Torks video to make sure I got the hoses and process correct. I just didn't tighten one of the hose clamps enough. I noticed some carbon on the exhaust tips afterward.

I've had the cans on for less than 2 months and there was an ounce of two of oil in the pcv can so there is blow-by happening.

Next time you drain the can it would be useful to note current mileage so you can subtract from your mileage on the next drainage an measure how much oil you get /mile.

I didn't say there isn't blow-by happening, I'm saying it's relatively little this early in the game. Besides, what's in the can is not quite representative of how much actually collects in the intakes: the whole reason for this setup is because this gunk is easily burned up by the engine when cycled back into the intake; so most of what's in your can would actually be gone under normal operating conditions. Catch cans are actually adding to pollution environmentally (though, I chuckle at myself for pointing this out when I've deleted 2 cats): dumping this gunk will poison whatever soil or stain whatever concrete or stay in a barrel at the bottom of the ocean for a very long time. The engine runs hot enough to just burn this garbage up...

When you blew the hose off it generated a vacuum leak? boost leak. That would cause a CEL for two different reasons one is high idle and the other is underboost. IDK what hoses you are using. The hoses could possible be collapsing under vacuum. I would contact who ever you bought the cans from and see what they recommend to do i.e. different hose, clamps and so on.
