Kia’s Overall Score Increases Eight Points Since Last Year
  • Stinger fastback sedan dazzled in their respective segments
  • Kia continues to cement its place among the top 10 non-premium brands
IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 2, 2018 – Following the launch of the 2018 Rio and highly anticipated 2018 Stinger, Kia Motors America (KMA) has earned two more J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) awards for its stylish subcompact and its powerful fastback sports sedan. The double win helped increase Kia’s overall score by eight points since last year, while also securing the brand’s spot among the top 10 non-premium nameplates. The announcement follows Kia Motors being named the highest ranked mass market brand in J.D. Power Initial Quality Study for the fourth consecutive year1, with the Rio also capturing a win in the small car segment.

“Whether it be a practical commuter car for people just looking to get from point A to B, or a sports sedan with up to 365-horsepower for enthusiasts, we design every Kia with the customer in mind,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning, KMA. “Earning a J.D. Power APEAL award for both the Rio and Stinger demonstrates the level of dedication we put on delivering a superior combination of the desirable features and attributes today’s savvy car buyers want from their vehicles.” Read more...

Nice !

Are we becoming brand snobs now with Kia?

Not entirely following... What makes it seem that way?

Humor. If Kia keeps topping the quality charts, people may start buying them to replace their German brands. I like to drive my cars, not spend a day sitting in a waiting room playing solitaire on my cell phone while they perform the "safety checks" and all the mandatory crap they do on the Germans. They are all nice cars, but they aren't that great.

Understood! Heh. You never know. One day, maybe...

Surprised they got an initial quality award with all the paint issues. I wonder if JD counts a half or full car repaint as a single defect the same as a trunk rattle or faulty light bulb?

its not a vehicle specific award Bob , its the total brand , the Stinger represents a miniscule portion of Kia sales , and the "problems" the Stinger has experienced are very isolated , I've got one of the first GTs in North America , built in October and aside from a trunk rattle which was dealer corrcted . NO issues ...................do the math

If you read the article the award is for the Stinger. Kia is recalling and repainting all yellow Stingers and the peeling and chipping paint is also fairly common on other colors.

You mentioned The IQ award , which is total brand , the story is about the Execution and Layout . There is a very minor # of "issues" on the first year of this car ..................FAKE NEWS !! bawaaaa

What i’ve been hearing about the Stinger compared to the new Volvo XC90, these items are minor in comparison and they jacked up the price of that vehicle a lot! Actually, all of their new products have big price increase but there have been growing pains. The Stinger is nowhere close to the kind of issues other first year cars are having. The APEAL award says a lot about the car, KIA did a great job overall and the areas they have issue in, are being corrected. They didn’t get to the top by not fixing issues, they listen to their customers, research the issue and offer fixes to keep their customers happy. Sadly, some folks want instant gratification without understanding that issues need to be researched, fixes tested and approved before being implemented. If a manufacturer rushed a fix and the issue persisted, then they get blasted for not doing a good job. Thing is, while folks have been thinking KIA a crap company, they have never closed shop here and continued to improve their products and are now at the top. Kudos KIA!

I didn't mention the IQ award, i just read the aricle link in the original post. I also didn't say their was a large number of (different) issues, but did say a severe issue like paint is a common problem and wondered if they gave any severity weighting to the issues. With several thousand dollars in paint issues personally that kia won't cover, the 700 -ish yellows recalled and the 100 or so polled in this forum, I think I have a right to question the quality award not considering the impact of a given defect.

my point was the Stinger has minimal impact on the IQ , as its based on feedback on their total Kia portfolio of cars

Deleted and moved to another thread now that I’m sober.

I'm sorry, but with nearly 10,000 Stingers sold worldwide, the *maybe* 80 of us (like 20 actually active lol) on the paint thread do not make the issue "common".

Car people are beginning to understand. Brand snobs probably never will.
At my Cars and Coffee this weekend, it was easy to tell apart the brand snobs. Car people were thrilled to see the Stinger, others were not so into it. The German fans seemed threatened lol one guy's eyes went really wide when I told him I traded in my BMW. For some people, it's only the badge that matters.

I pay no attention to to those awards .

I agree with one small (huge) correction. That 10,000 number only represents cars sold in the Americas. The total number worldwide should be north of 30k now (I saw a 25k figure posted somewhere a few months ago)
