If you were following the other thread Paint Chip Issue, I had posted a few times about my Stinger's paint. I heard back from the dealership, and KIA approved the repainting of my babe. I was so ready for a fight but was really surprised it was approved.

So my questions are, is there anything I need to ask when I drop off? What should I look for when I pick her back up? I also have the paint chipping/peeling around the driver's side headlight, and will be pointing this out at drop off. I do not think it is a full repaint (not positive) so if it is only specific body panels, I am concerned about the paint matching. Any tips on checking that?

The estimated time for the repaint is 4 days. Wow what am I going to do without my babe for 4 days??

Thanks so much! :)

What color is your car? Some colors are definitely harder to match to other body panels.

Among other things.....who is doing the painting? Will they remove any panels for the respray? Are they taking it down to bare metal? If something doesn’t match (in your eyes) or is detectable in the least, what options do you have left?

Just a few things I would be asking. I’m sure there others. Make sure they remove any overspray is not removing panels. Your expectation should be that this will be like right out of the factory.

These are exactly the questions I need, thank you. The dealership is sending it to a body shop they use on a regular basis. I do not know who the body shop is, but will defiantly ask at drop off. I would *hope* they take it down to bare metal, again will ask.

If it’s not a full respray, when you pick it up (before signing anything) Park it in the sun and walk around the car and check for how the color matches. Don’t walk around it just near the car, step 20-30 feet back and look. Then rotate the car 180 degrees to change the angle of the sun on the car and do it again.

KIA has to have an outline of what they are doing and what they are paying for. Where are the specifics for this claim? Any bumper or hood replacement? I was told by KIA at launch that Blue and Red is a special paint process. I'd be looking into how special and can can this easily be matched. Too many unknowns. One paint shop might have a different opinion or method from another. I can only assume KIA is keeping these claims tight to mirror one another. Your paint guy screws up.....you are on your own. I'm wanting to see a detailed solution with exactly what to do from the factory.

Id check to make sure the finish (orange peel) matches as well. Its hard to do though. Also check the edges of the panels, most dealer warranty work is done cheaply by poor shops and often they will mask (around the headlights or other trim) rather than removing it properly. You dont want the paint/clear peeling at the edges in a year. I know that most people seem to change cars like they change underwear but be aware that the paint on the new panels is going to fade at a different rate than the existing factory paint in the long run.

4 days sounds awful quick. From our Australian member it sounded longer than that. Lot of detailed prep involved to pull this off.

I'd be investigating well ahead of drop off. Tour the facility. I would. Ask for some type of assurance this is fixed and will not happen. What is warranty? Documentation?

Theres no way possible a re-paint can happen in 4 days..... Maybe with the Maco "Scratch it with sand paper and paint it" process, but that's it.

The prep work to do this right takes more than 4 days..... And there is no way in hell I would just drop the car off at the dealership. They could tell you where to take it so you can go over the repair order line by line with the body shop and see who will be doing the work. This isn't a 40yr old Yugo getting rattle-canned, and I dam sure wouldn't trust the work to just anyone.

Go over the work order, get detailed notes of what is being done, i.e. down to bare metal, scratch-n-paint, etc. What body panels, if any are being painted and/or replaced, are they taking windows out and handles/badges off and replacing them, how in the world are they painting it so quick when others took 4-6 weeks to get completed, and theres probably a million more but that's just off the top of my head.

I would be VERY cautious if they tell you 4 days, I just don't see any way possible, even working 24 hrs a day......

Couldn’t agree more about the 4 days being quick. When finished, sit it next to another brand new blue at a dealer and compare the paint finishes. It’s your money they took to get this car, you have every right to demand the best.

A quote/estimate I got from a shop I've used in the past that does fantastic work was 6 days (not the entire car). Attached is the quote with exactly the work they would be doing:

Thanks so much everyone. I have a long lists of questions to ask at drop off now. If I am not happy or comfortable with the answers, I do not have to drop off and can wait until KIA figures out what to do. "My" guy at the dealership service center is someone I have known for a few years now, and has serviced all of my KIA's to date (Optima & Stinger to name 2) and I do trust him. He has never bullshitted me before and always goes out of his way for me. I really cannot say enough good things about him.

I do agree that 4 days seems a bit to quick. I will ask him about it. I do not want a "MAACO" job done.

Funny thing is that after the initial review of the paint almost 2 weeks ago, more and more spots have been popping up, and they are becoming more noticeable. I rebadged to the e-badge and the Stinger script, so I am also wondering about that too. I know those badges are hard to come by now.

Again thanks everyone, you guys have really helped this girl out so far. :)

Glad we could help, and depending on where those spots are, will they guarantee this will never happen again anywhere else? If it does will they also honor a fix then. That's the main issue with paint problems. Sure the front end will show it first because it gets all the wind, road debris, rain, etc and takes the most abuse.

But say next year, you notice the same thing on the back hatch or roof, what then? It can definitely take longer for other places to show, but if they are bad, they will show up. Just some more food for thought when you go in and give them the list to answer, in detail, before you hand over the keys.

Please keep us posted with how it goes!

I can tell you this.....It is cheaper to replace a front bumper than try to refinish it. Cheap piece of plastic. The labor is in removing the sensors and reinstalling everything. We had one replaced and we know. They come with no trims and no emblem. They want you to remove the old and transfer to the new. You have to be very careful in doing this.

It would be for the hood and fenders, not the bumper (which surprisingly is chip-free). Perhaps they would be removing it to do the job, but no re-paint.

The bumper (paint peeling) below the headlights is a major issue. This is widespread.

This is off a premium. I kept the bumper.
