Hey Stinger Fam,
Just new here so not sure if this particular issue has been covered about for Australia.

I have a 2021 Stinger GT (original owner) with the original PS4 tyres still on the back. The car only has just done 23,000k and I am finding both rear tyres have hairline cracks on the outside where the tread block wraps around to the sidewall. Has anyone else had this issue and did Michelin replace the tyres under warranty?

Also the car has always been garaged with the correct pressures in the tyres.

Keen to see what others have experienced before I call Michelin.

This car has a 7 year Unlimited KM factory warranty.

Take it to any Kia Dealer and ask them.

That isn't just sidewall cracking, the cracks advance right up into the tread between the blocks. You should definitely get a prorating on new set of tires. Let us know how that goes?

My original PS4 tires wore quite strangely..

Note! if the video says rear, that is a mistake. This is the front .
Michelin PS4 - Kia stinger front tire wear
Kia Stinger front tires replaced...

I was sure both my camber and toe were out... But I replaced these tires WITHOUT adjusting the alignment. And my next tires did not wear like this at all!

Weird.

Sometimes the cracking rubber is due to storage location, any running electric motors produce ozone which causes rubber fatigue and cracking.
Google it..it is a known issue ....
Do you have a water pump or other running motors in the area of your garage near the rear of the car.....
Warrantee doesnt cover tires..unless you got the rim and tire coverage.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

1. Where is our usual DJ Toro club soundtrack on these videos?
2. Please tell me you weren't under the car with only the jack holding that corner? Even a cheap Harbor Freight (Princess Auto) jackstand with the jack just barely lowered as backup would give you a second chance if something goes wrong...

I assume there was a jackstand thrown under there somewhere safe.

My usual modus operandi is to have a jackstand under somewhere, but to NOT lower the car onto the jackstand...this video was from 2020, so I don't recall any specifics..,

I spoke to Kia yesterday, Their excuse was that the tyres are a consumable and they don't provide the warranty for the tyre as they didn't manufacture it(which i fully understand).
But... they designated these tyres as the OEM and should take some responsibility and claim the Michelin warranty on behalf of the purchaser.

They then suggested I call the local Michelin dealer.

Here comes the run-around!

"Tyre Warranty"
The KIA New Vehicle Warranty does not cover tyres. Tyres are covered by the express warranties provided by
their respective manufacturers or suppliers and any claim for tyres should be directed to the nearest tyre
supplier or manufacturer service agent.

BUT, it also says......

" What is Not Covered
The items specified below are not covered by the KIA New Vehicle Warranty:

"Wear and tear due to normal operation, including but not limited to brake and clutch components,
tyres, suspension, engine and transmission components."

You didn't buy these tyres from a tyre dealer.

The tyre dealer you take the car didn't sell the tyres..........so has no responsibility to provide you warranty.

So you can call Michelin.

I took my Michelin Sports 4s tires off with 3000 miles on them, replaced with All Season tires, Midwest thing. I put them in my climate controlled storage. I checked the “Born On Date” the following year, I wanted put them on new rims for the summer on my 2019 Stinger they were 2017 born on date tires. I bought her off the showroom floor in 2019 with 12 miles on her, Mind Blown.

Are you saying that the PS4 Michelins died in storage?

“Summer” tires PS4 are good for 5-10 years depending on use or not. The tires on my 2019 Stinger GT1 born on date was “2017” off of the showroom floor. I didn’t check the date assuming they were 2019 tires, so yes they expire in climate controlled storage.

Does a tire last better/longer being used, than storing it off a wheel even in climate control?

What’s Covered and for How Long

a. Tyres sold within three years of the manufacturing date
Where the tyres are sold within three years of the manufacturing date, the warranty shall be for the life of the original usable tread pattern or six years from the date of purchase, whichever comes first.

What’s not Covered

Tyres which become unserviceable under the following circumstances are not covered by this warranty:

  • Tyre purchased second hand, this includes tyres fitted to used cars and imported vehicles, without proof of purchase;

Conditions and Exclusions

Where the tyre becomes unserviceable due to a condition within the terms of this warranty, MICHELIN may at its option repair the tyre, supply an equivalent tyre as replacement, reimburse the value of the tyre based on the remaining tread depth or offer such other form of compensation according to its prevailing commercial policy.

This warranty does not provide compensation for service charges incurred, charges for mounting and balancing, loss of time, loss of use of vehicle, inconvenience or consequential damage insofar as the law permits.

Tyres presented to an authorised MICHELIN Dealer for compensation remain the property of the consumer and MICHELIN accepts no responsibility for loss of or damage to tyres which are in the custody or control of an authorised MICHELIN Dealer for the purposes of inspection. Tyres accepted by an authorised MICHELIN Dealer for compensation become the property of MICHELIN. In the event of a dispute, the consumer must make the tyre available for further inspection.

The same if used or not for Summer Tires. Of course if you are abusing the tires they will expire a lot quicker.

But I am addressing your "expired" tires in storage, combined with the OP on cracking. Your PS4 in storage got cracks too, is that right? Abusing a tire while on the car can be several ways, but the most common is driving hard. "Abusing" equals hooning / fun, and no tire is going to last long enough to develop cracks if used like that.

So according to this... They should replace my tyres..
They should!

But also in Australia, and you can search this at the ACCC is "implied" warranty. This was introduced by Federal government sometime after 2008.......

So irrespective of any manufacturer warranty there is an obligation to provide a warranty for any product (including cars) that do not mean the design expectation of a product.

So while a warranty may say 12 months (not your tyres of course), but the design life is say 10 years, there is still an obligation by the manufacturer to warranty the product for a reasonable amount of time in excess of their stated warranty.

But it also explains why in Australia, a new car warranty is typically 7 years unlimited km transferable to second, third fourth tenth owners for the life of the new car warranty. All owners receive the same "free" new car warranty on that car until it expires.

So I spoke to the Michelin rep who apparently had not seen anything like this before and got directed back to Kia and that there is nothing they can do. I mentioned all the warranty and product responsibilities but they couldn't care less... Certainly won't be putting a set of Michelin's back on the car once these tyres die.
