Turbo Fail

So it’s been about 1 year since my last overboost and it worked great until last week… it went into overboost again and the dealer still doesn’t know anything. I can’t believe they have no clue what is going on. I’ve heard something about the wastegate. Not sure if that could be an issue or not but I’m going to mention it when the car goes in on April 5th. If anyone has had a permanent fix without tuning the car, I would love to hear about it. I will post an update about a week or so after I pick up the car. Fingers crossed they figure this crap out!!

Probably wg that is stuck in closed or almost closed position, then boost will rise with rpm and it will overboost. If to much or prolonged it will mostly kill pistons.

It has only happened twice in a year but I sure don’t want that to happen! Either way, I have warranty so I’m covered!!

Warranty is good. Ewgs is a common failure on our cars. I had it twice.

Kill the pistons? I'm pretty sure I'm having the same issue. The car drives ok but just very underpowered. Should I not drive it at all? It is a 2019 premium by the way. Is this something only a dealer could fix or is it even worth going to a local mechanic? Thanks guys you always have lots of great info

If your having an over boost occur with a 2.0L it isn't the same thing that this thread is about. If turning it off and back on doesn't restore boost then it is something else. I have a '19 Premium as well. Without boost this four pot car would be a dog. If it stopped engaging the turbo you bet I'd have it in the shop right away.

Thanks for this reply. I'll take it in to the shop tomorrow. Has anyone had a turbo issue on a 2.0?

I don't recall, so, if anyone posted about a turbo issue on the 2.0L twin scroll, I either missed it or it was a once-off years ago.

I just found this. Looks like this is the exact problem I'm having. Hopefully this recall will fix it. I probably would have stopped looking if not for your reply. Thanks so much!

Yes, the fuel pump recall. I had tossed that from my consciousness. Had the inspection done. My fuel pump was not in need of replacement. When you said loss of power on this thread, I didn't even think of the symptoms of the failing fuel pump. Hopefully your issue is well understood by now and you'll be in and out.

Well I finally got to the root of the problem. Long story short the waste gate was stuck open. Kia fixed it under warranty. Worked fine for 3 weeks. Stuck again. While I was waiting for an appointment it miraculously unstuck. Has been fine for exactly 4 weeks. We'll see what happens now. At this point the 5 year power train warranty has expired.

Does anyone have experience with this stick open waste gate? It seems like it's something that could possibly be fixed at home?

I would have posted sooner but this thing has taken forever to get settled and it still could come back

The powertrain warranty is the ten years / 100K miles warranty. It's the bumper to bumper warranty that is five years / 60K miles.

I thought they told me that if I didn't buy it new it was only 5 years and the turbo would be part of the power train. I hope I heard them wrong

If you bought it used and not as a CPO, that is true. Sorry that I didn't notice your status as a second owner.

bummer that in the four weeks since the warranty repair your 5 years are up? maybe since it is work that they did, they will warranty their own warranty work?

I was lucky enough to get it in with 3 days left on my warranty the first time. The waste gate seems to be opening and closing properly for now but if it sticks again I'll see if they will warranty their previous work
