Out of nowhere my 2022 GT1 is having a hard time turning over when I start it. There are currently no lights on, on the dash. I haven't looked under the hood yet but I did open/close the back hatch right before this started happening (no idea if that would have anything to do with this issue, just adding it). I plan on calling the dealer first thing in the morning, but I wanted to check on here just in case this is an obvious issue.

Please let me know if there are any other details needed and thank you in advance for anyone taking the time to answer!

You should share a sound byte.

A video, with sound, would describe the issue more thoroughly.

Streamable, imgur, YouTube, Vimeo, tons of free sites to share videos.

Take a volt meter to the battery (or at least under hood terminals). What's it read with the car off?

While I would not expect a '22 battery to be dead, technically (depending when you took delivery), the car could be 3 years old, and if driven minimally battery could be weak/discharged/failed.

Or could be the starter is failed/failing.

Here are a couple short videos with sound, my apologies not the best quality.

Heading into town to grab a volt meter tomorrow morning, thank you for the insight!

Definitely SOUNDS like a weak battery. But that doesn't mean it is. A failing starter can sound the same.

Might wanna stop by an auto parts store that offers free battery tests. I multimeter will not be able to tell you much regarding the health of the battery, or it's ability to provide starting current.

A complete battery test (usually free at parts stores) can provide much more detail.

THANK YOU for the response! I will take it to AutoZone tomorrow. Hoping it’s just the battery!

If I were you, I would be hoping it's a starter!

The battery is likely not to be covered under any sort of warranty.

A starter motor is almost certainly to be covered under the factory warranty.

I had my starter replaced, luckily covered by extended warranty. (Shown in $CAD).
It is quite a laborious job.

I definitely hope my starter goes out prior to my warranty expiring! I went to start it this morning and it was dead. I was able to jump it with a portable battery jumper. This may be a stupid question but could it still potentially be my starter going out? I’m headed to AutoZone in an hour but thought I’d ask the question.

If it is the battery, should this be something I order special or go grab from the local Costco? I have a grown son to help put it in, trying to avoid the dealer until absolutely necessary!

Costco sells agm batteries (H7/H8) that fit the stinger 2.5/3.3. It's a heavy battery too. I'd buy from costco as their return policy is simple, 3 years, no questions asked (more or less).

If it wouldn't start under its own power, but was able to start with a booster pack, it is almost certainly, a case of a bad battery.

Another potential issue is a parasitic draw. I have not read any stories of anyone having a factory defect which presented as a parasitic draw. Does your vehicle have aftermarket accessories such as a dash camera with parking mode? Or any other electronic accessory that could drain a battery while parked?

I also, would definitely use a Costco Kirkland AGM battery as a replacement. Probably the best value available.

I went to AutoZone and I’m not so sure the person who helped me really knew what was going on. He said his meter showed my battery completely dead but when I started it, it struggled but did turn over without having to jump it.

I don’t have anything aftermarket on it but I did recently have an auto body shop repair my rear bumper from a fender bender a few weeks ago. I didn’t have frame damage but enough to cause a $9k fix. I had absolutely no issues prior so I’m wondering if they messed with something given the location of the fuse box and battery.

I think I’m going to avoid going in circles with it and take it to the dealer tomorrow just incas it’s something I’m likely going to overlook. Do you know if you can go to a Genesis dealer or only Kia when it’s under warranty?

Only kia will do any warranty work. The other brand dealers can do maintenance or out of pocket repairs.

If it were me, I'd take all the crap out of the trunk and post some pics of the area including the battery. Maybe something will jump out as not connected or connected properly.

To measure parasitic draw, set meter to measure amps or milliamps, then place the meter in between battery cable and battery terminal. I don't know what the spec is for this car and it varies. Immediately after shutoff it will be higher than some time after shut off. Someone here probably knows the details.

What is the build date - it's on the sticker inside the driver door?

Keep in mind there will be a diag fee until it's determined it's a warranty covered issue. Starters are, batteries generally not (after 3 years).

Spec is 50 mA
I'll find a screenshot and update this post

**Edit - better than a screenshot.
Search for "Parasitic" on this page

Limit value (after 10 - 20 min.) : Below 50 mA

A less accurate method, but easier, is to slap on a clamp meter, if you have one.

This wasn't a parasitic draw test, but related.

Yup.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but, the dealer might be your best bet!

Generally, I don't recommend the dealer for anything.

Thank you both for all the info, much appreciated! I’m putting a call in now for an appointment with my local Kia dealer. I hope this goes smoother than I anticipate

Good luck of the dealership. Hopefully all covered under warranty.

Please do come back and update us with the final results, when resolved.
