Had a Strange noise came from the engine last night after having done 4 or 5 0-100kph runs(jb4 map2 93 +torco) didnt use launch control or brake i was tuning throttle controller .I had at least 5 mins cooling time light driving in between runs .

On my last run at the top end of third gear i got sudden whine (not unlike turbo whine but much louder than normal) it was quite loud . I backed off straight away cooled it down for ages with light driving. But as soon as engine builds power whine was there but not as bad . So i drove home easy assuming id just screwed a turbo bearing . Drove this morning after warm up gave it a few light runs ...nothing !!So gave it a few hard runs still nothimg noise has gone .

Obviously something got hot wasnt happy or possible boost leak . possible transmission noise if hot?? but really sounded like noisy turbo but noise on power up not power down which is what i had when i had a worn bearing on a turbo a few years ago (different car) . it was like the old feedback noise you once had coming through a radio as you revved an engine only a deeper note but only under load or boost so whine went up but not down ????????
Only mods to car are K&N panel filters jb4 ,throttle controller

Any ideas others had this problem ?

Never had the problem. Just to make it easier for me to understand. Comparable to a turbo whine. But you have stock air boxes (nonexistent noise)
All from under the hood
Do you have oil catch cans?
Bov to atmosphere?
Very humid climate
How many miles
And maybe last thing. Can you recreate it on command?

The noise was gone the next day, about 1500 miles ,no mods at all other than jb4 and k&n panel filters . Obviously something got hot after 4 or 5 runs temperature was 15 degrees celcius . There was a bit of fog around but humidity was 60% (according to weatherapp) . I cant get it to make the noise again it was very concerning on the night but havnt heard it since

May i suggest the belts could have squealed? But thats about all i can come up with. Maybe the boost got higher than the internal wastgates and it was that noise you had not heard yet... im reaching for an explanation

Your ride was saying, "I'm weary now. Take me home!" That's how I'd interpret a sudden "complaint" that was gone the next morning. :P

Yep id say you are pretty right . .. belt squeal possible !! but not that sort of sound.. wastegate maybe?? its gone im happy ,well very happy now running map3 e30 .only done about 50klms its still getting faster

Mine just did it today, done the exact same thing, jb4 map 2, intakes, intercooler and midpipes. After a few runs drove it back and on the way back It started doing it its almost like a supercharger whine coming from the right hand side, doesn't do it while idling or reving it only when under boost like past 4k rpms. Gonna let it cool down untill tomorrow and hopefully it's nothing major. Mine is quite loud tho. Did it ever come back ? Or did u find out what causes it ?

Failing turbo bearings. When they're hot they expand and allow the turbine wheel to touch the housing, making the halmark dentist drill sound. When cold they contract and the problem is briefly solved.

It will get worse and worse until the bearing and/or impeller completely fails.

Seen it many times before in the industry.

Get it dealt with sooner rather than later. Those bits of impeller are going into your engine.

Is this the noise you speak of? I've been hearing it in mine.

Is this the noise you speak of? I'm trying to figure out my issue as well.

No, I can't seem to find out where the noise is coming from either.
Could smoke test to see if there's a pinhole leak somewhere in the intake. Definitly sounds like something leaking under pressure.

Enlightening me with this "smoke test" never performed one. I'm planning on taking it to a performance shop this Thursday, but if I can locate the issue myself it would be awesome.

Mine was similar, and had upgraded the intercooler so was the charge pipe it got lose and caused some boost leak
Yeah I have a BMS FMIC so let me check there

Literally smoke is drawn into the intake and you just watch for any leaks. Very low tech but effective.

here are a few possibilities:

  1. Turbo-related issue: The sudden whine you experienced could be related to the turbocharger. It's possible that there was a temporary issue with the turbo, such as a loose or damaged component, that caused the noise. However, since the noise has disappeared after driving the car and performing subsequent runs, it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause.
  2. Boost leak: A boost leak can cause unusual noises under load. If there is a leak in the boost system, it can result in a loss of pressure and affect the performance of the turbocharger. Inspecting the intercooler, hoses, and connections for any signs of damage or loose fittings could help identify if a boost leak is present.
  3. Transmission issue: While less likely, it's possible that the noise could be related to the transmission. Heat and stress from the hard runs might have caused an issue in the transmission, resulting in the noise you heard in car. If the noise persists or you notice any other transmission-related symptoms, it's advisable to have it inspected by a professional.
