I have a 2022 Stinger GT1. Was setting the clock to go with Daylight Savings Time and almost immediately, the info screen shows an excited warning that I'm dischargine the battery.

The car has a very large amperage battery with a long discharge time. No way doing what I was going with the headlights off is a significant drain on that battery.

I could see it if you'd let the car sit with the engine off and headlights on high beam for 10 min and maybe a second 10 min run which would be ignorance on the driver's part but not what I did. Comments? Thanks, Don

you must do short hops in the stinger. the discharge warning will come on sooner when the battery doesn't get fully recharged from running. it is completely usual for the stinger to give that warning within well under five minutes, usually no more than two or three, when the engine is shut off but systems have not shut down yet, stereo on or off it doesn't make any difference, even when the battery is fully charged.

That warning is annoying...
I just ignore it. No way to disable it as far as I know.

The 100 Ah AGM battery in our cars is amoung the largest available for automobiles.

I do most of my software updates with the engine off too, it only takes 30-45 mins, and the massive battery can easily handle it (if your battery is in half way decent condition).

Thanks for the response. I have a CTEK MXS 5.0 which seems to be a high end charger. It has 8 stages from basic charging to battery reconditioning. Haven't gone to stage 8 yet with it, takes hours just to get to stage 6 or 7.

I'm not sure how to categorize the driving the Stinger gets, certainly not stop and go. Construction all over so there are short trips.

Wife's going to several art classes this weekend, should be a good time to let the CTEK go all the way. If you're not familiar with the CTEK, one of the really nice features is that it specifically says you don't need to take the battery out of the car. No disconnecting and reconnecting. Don

Yeah, bending way over to get to the ends of the battery and lifting it out carefully is a PITA. Don

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

My guess is that the alert is automatic, regardless of battery level or how severe the drain is, so you're aware right away and don't wander off.

Not so much "your battery is almost dead" as "you have the system awake and doing stuff we normally expect the engine running for, so it'll eventually drain the battery".

It's the same as the McDonald's "CAUTION: HOT!" warning on their coffee cups. They are there to CYA. No doubt some idiot left their car stereo on to listen to Cat Stevens deep in some national forest, drained their battery, couldn't start their car, got stranded overnight, and became grizzly bear snack. Mfr of that car got sued by their grieving relatives for not having warning on the car not to do that.

So now there is.

I figured it was more that there's a lot more power-hungry stuff going on vs. older/lower-featured cars. Most people know that blasting the stereo or leaving the headlights on will drain their battery, but might not consider that having both screens and the brains behind them awake is like running a couple computers off your battery.

How much current or power do you think our cars draw with accessory mode (radio)?

I will measure next time I am tinkering... I'm guessing between 2 and 5 amps (24 - 60 watts) in accessory mode at mid volume.

I said I would, so I did.
It's a little higher than I expected, (6.8A just listening to music). So my 90Ah batter can power the accessory mode for many many hours of worry free power.

The rest of the datt is just for the sake of more data.

Current draw with:
  • Accessory, playing music at vol 20 = 6.6A
  • Ignition on, music vol of 20 = 11.8A
  • Ignition on, vol 20, headlights on = 18.0A
  • Ignition on, vol 20, headlights on, heated seats and heated steering = 37A
  • Ignition, vol 20, headlights, high beams, front and rear heated seats, heated steering = 44.8A
Receipts attached.

Nice post, great photos and oh my, a clamp on amp meter. I last saw those ages ago with my gunner's mates trouble shooting the 5"/54 rapid fire gun

6 amps at 12.5 volts is 75 watts, which I guess is reasonable for stereo at 20 plus whatever else the car is running during Accessory (screens etc).

6 amps / 75 watts for the headlights seems high if everything is LED -- is that the case for your 2018 GT Limited? Or is it LED for the main low beams but xenon/incandescent for the others maybe?

75w for headlights ON sounds about right for LEDs (headlights + position lights). Halogen bulbs are typically 55-65w each, so both sides would've been 110-130w total for 2 bulbs, or over 200w for 4 bulbs (2 low + 2 high).

The only incandescent bulbs in my car are the reverse bulbs. Everything else is 100% LED - OEM LED .

The extra ~6 amps for headlights feels right to me... Headlights on means headlights switch on. - includes tail lights marker lights.

Should change those reverse lights to LED. One of the first things I did.
