New Navigation Software Update - April 2022

Damn that's pretty crazy. I just figured it would be like most updates of the sort where it just replaces the "system" partition and does whatever updates, considering it's android based. Good to know though. Guess I'll make sure to keep it updated.

yea... i don't know exactly how the update is installed.. .but with the experiences of those people and mine updating on every update... it does seem to take longer if you go longer between versions...

was at the dealership getting serviced this past saturday; kia connect told me i have a navigation update prior to saturday.
i asked the service department about them doing the update. he said it would take 3 to 4 hours.
im just going to update it myself. anything i need to know? download the update on a usb drive. does the car have to be running or in accessory mode? what menus popping up should i expect...etc. how do you know when its complete.

"Lessons learned" from my recent update:

1. Check the model and firmware first before installing the software updater. Get a photo if necessary. I believe I read on these boards if your car has a firmware for another country, you can't really cross-update. My car was originally supposed to be sold in Canada, so I had to make sure I downloaded the updates for Canada. Don't worry; if that's the case for you as well all of the US maps work.
2. Make sure your thumbdrive is at least 40GB in size. 32GB is too small.
3. I believe you have to start in *on* (but not running), and it had to be on the whole time. You can have your car running and drop into accessory mode if needed. It took me about 45 minutes per install (more on this later), but I have no clue when it was last updated, if not running factory firmware/maps.
4. When done, the system reboots. When it goes black screen, remove the thumbdrive. Stupid me, I left it in after it updated the first time and right after it rebooted, it recognized the thumbdrive and automatically tried to install everything again. I didn't want to risk bricking my car, so I had to let it run ALL over again....

To be honest It wasn't difficult, just time consuming. The worst part was leaving the thumbdrive in after it finished. But, as aforementioned everything works, some roads were updated with their updated speed limits/new roads, and I lost the nixie-tube radio.

thanks for that. cant believe they cant program in some text that pops up on the screen telling you its finished and to remove the usb drive. i just may not update it all at this point, i never go anywhere anyway. work and home rinse and repeat.
and if we are paying for kia connect subscriptions, that uses OTA data, why cant they just update it that way??
weird stuff imo.

It is funny you mention KiaConnect and OTA data. My wife recently got a Mustang Mach E; all of her updates are pushed OTA. Hell, her Apple Carplay and Android Auto are over bluetooth, not wired.

Granted, neither of those are a big deal, and even the update running twice in the end wasn't *that* big of a deal; just annoying--and not as annoying as getting e-mails from the stealership group that sold me my car saying, "Now is a great time to buy a Kia!" Yesterday. I've barely had my car two weeks. Can't I just enjoy the one I just bought?

Sorry...I digress. But yeah, I'd think if you have about an hour with nothing better to do then maybe you grab a book and update your car's maps/firmware.

good points there..exactly, push those updates OTA, wtf is wrong with kia, they are behind the times. the other stuff, thats lack of UX design. its like a programmer made it, no offense if youre a programmer lol. behind the times, do better kia.
and yes, funny as hell, now is great time to buy a kia right after you just bought one, dude, every body sucks and companies do not pay attention to things like oh shit we need to take this guy off the mailing list since he just bought a new car. this kind of stuff happens to me all the time. i still get mail and phone calls about my Honda lease is about to be up and thats like 5 cars ago!!

people are not updating their automations and data files in their computer systems that handle all this shit, and its a huge mess that will never be fixed...
you'd have to go in to communication preferences and uncheck the things you dont want to get mail about and then still it may not be fixed lol. im sure there are other factors as well.

Not sure about CarPlay, but Android Auto uses WiFi Direct, not Bluetooth. It uses bluetooth to initiate the connection and start the wifi direct connection, but after that it all goes over wifi..

edit: except phone calls. They're still over bluetooth.

The new ev6 is the first kia to get ota updates enabled... supposedly other 22+ models with telematics should get an update that allows ota updates in the future.

if the version is quite a bit behind.... it does take longer... my sister in laws telluride with the similar wide screen infotainment with usb update was 4 updates behind... it took over 4 hours to complete... my coworkers 2020 palisade was also never updated since purchase new and took 6 hours(they didn't think it would take so long so it was sitting running in his driveway for 6 hours )... but when they did the most recent one after the april release, since they were just updating to the next version it finished in 50 min.

I would assume, since I guess the 2022+ don't use the SD card, it has to copy all the map data as well. Models that use the SD card I am pretty sure are useless if the card is not installed, so I think they use the SD card IRT for the map data, so it is not copied with an update, just the system files are.
It has never taken more than 20-30 min in my 2019 (which uses the SD card).

Given that Chrysler had huge security issues with their OTA stuff early on where someone could take over the car, I would rather them take their time to get it right and avoid the mistakes of other companies.
