Turbo protection/warranty

I see this all the time. Previous owner mods/tampers with the vehicle. Doesn't do a thorough job and then they get something big that happens to the car. Flashing CEL, misfire, etc. Can't fix themselves, don't want to pay to have taken care of properly. So they just clear the code or clean it up and then offload it to the next dealership. This is part of the reason I stopped buying used cars. Can't trust people.

Carfax can be useful but useless too. My old camaro sustained nearly $15K in repairs - bounced driver front and rear off a guard rail. Those repairs never made it to carfax. Statefarm was the insurance at the time iirc.

I would never trust carfax entirely. Useful for general information at best.

Carfax would be irrelevant in this case. The previous owner may have been mod heavy and went tracking etc... would never know.

And if you think the ecu was tampered with most definitely they went all out imo.

Yeah my local guys who caught all this said for sure the ecu was tampered with just by the way it was sitting improperly. If Kia corp pulls through with the turbos after getting this done I’m just going to take it big turbo Robby who has his own garage and mark Russell . Both recently have been doing a lot of work stingers in my area recently.

Yes, it's not hard to have a clean carfax on a vehicle. A lot of times, information just doesn't make it to the carfax. You can also pay them to take stuff off I've heard. Not sure if there's truth to that, but I do know that you can dispute information on their and that can change the carfax.

Example: You go in for an oil change and the mileage is notated incorrectly. You then go to get a state inspection for the vehicle (we have to do these annually in MA) and the mileage is less than what is reported on the history report. The vehicle will now show for a possible "odometer rollback". The vehicle never had the odometer messed with, it's an honest mistake. Carfax can make a change to it, but there is a process.

There are also multiple different vendors that provide a "carfax". Carfax is just a brand for history reports. Other vendors have ways of adjusting the information. If you want, DM me your VIN and I can try to see if there's something negative in your history report. We use a different brand instead of Carfax.

I'm glad discount tire doesn't report to carfax. Went in with slightly over 5K on the odo for bal/rotation, left with a ticket that said 54K miles!@# Discount tire fixed it in their system after a call.

I can only assume SRV isn't paying attention and doesn't realize you bought the car used and have no idea when, exactly, the damage happened. Previous owner could have run without intakes for giggles, or could have improperly installed an aftermarket intake, or any number of situations.

Update - spoke with a supervisor from Kia corp and they stated because its wear and tear from the turbos and not a malfunction or mechanical error I would be responsible for the turbos . I’ll take the hit on the chin and keep it moving . My question is are these turbos good oem replacements ? And are there any other options. So far these have been my findings.

Since there are no drivability issues and no engine codes ....

One option is to just correct the poor air filtration issue and drive it as is for another 100, or 200 thousand miles.

With propper air filtration, it is likely to continue working for a long long time.


I am curious about those turbos you posted. Hopefully someone chimes in who has used them.

Another option is to rebuild the center sections. Will be lot cheaper. But in this case i would be worrying about labor cost lot more, than parts cost. Are you gonna replace them by yourself or have a shop doing it?

I was thinking of this option but did not know any shops in my area where I could get it done . And as you stated labor costs would probably equal just getting new ones.
