I recently purchased the BMS Intercooler and upon opening the box I noticed some metal flakes on the cold (outlet) pipe of the intercooler. I contacted BMS and was told “Where do you see it? Maybe you can vacuum it or us airblower. I don’t see an issue in. The photo.” I followed their advice and did blow out what I could see using an air compressor. After that, I rinsed it with water, blew it out again with the air compressor, and let it dry out. It’s currently sitting in my garage. I’m slightly apprehensive about installing it due to the metal flakes (even though I think I removed most, if not all of them). I’m very tempted to return it, but at the same time I’m not sure if such small flakes would do any damage or if there is even any flakes remaining. What do you all recommend? I’ve attached pictures of the outlet and inlet pipes. I didn’t really see any metal flakes on the inlet pipe fins.

I’d be apprehensive as well. I’m surprised they didn’t tell you to send it back to be on the safe side.

I agree. I was too. It is a softer metal, so maybe that’s their reasoning behind their answer. Idk.

I doubt it would cost any issues. I installed mine a few months back. Never checked inside mine.

Soft, but can still interfere with rings, seals, oil passages or whatever.

I just got mine a couple weeks ago, still in the box. I guess I better check it.
I don't see how it would get in the oil passages though, since this is intake air.

I just put mine in without looking inside too. I'm sure it will be fine. At least I hope!

I plan to unbox and check mine tomorrow (watching football today).
I do know that they get the cores and weld their end tanks on, so maybe it is welding slag.
I ordered direct from BMS before Christmas and after a couple weeks I emailed them to get a ship date estimate and they responded promptly saying they were welding the tanks and were shipping the following week.

I unpacked and took pictures today, seems clean from what I can see.

After cleaning mine out I didn’t see any additional flaking, so I went ahead and installed it. I’ve had it on for a week now and no issues as of yet. Thanks for everyone’s input!

Im not sure I would install that . make them send you a replacement

Had I still noticed the metal flakes after cleaning then I would have definitely contacted them, but I felt confident enough after inspecting it to go through with the installation. I did consult with a few individuals who have way more experience than myself and they informed me I should not be too concerned.
