Gentleman. My 2021 Stinger has less than 5k miles and i managed to to curb rash the passenger side front and rear stock rims.. 3-4 inch gouges on the lip of the rim. Driving me nuts.. so im looking at options. Should i get them repaired? Anyone know the guestimate cost of that, and then get em powder coated gloss black? Im looking through the forum and at websites for aftermarket options.. million different options out there. My tires are fine and id like to continue using them, and i dont wanna spend a fortune. Are there any nice staggered 19 inch tire rim combo , gloss black out there for less than say 2 grand??? What would you guys do? Thanks for any info

I, am the "Curbinator" (according to Cowboy, he granted me the title :D).

Until a car wash tunnel rashed both left rims all the way round, I was sanding my curb rash down. It works quite well: you take a very heavy grit paper to remove the burs; then 200 grit to remove the heavy grit lines; then 2000 grit with lots of water to polish the damaged spot up. This method, of course, removes the clear coat: but going through a winter of exposed, polished alloy, did not dull those sanded/polished spots: I was encouraged, that if necessary, at some future time, I could just do a quick refresh with the wet sandpaper to restore the shine.

Show us some pics (you can check my earlier posts, especially on my original/first thread: the one that introduced me here Does anybody else need to learn where the wheels are on this car?).

I went to gloss black specifically for ease of repair: much more practical than trying to sand and polish alloy. My OEM wheels got powder coated gloss black: and so far, I have not curbed them since then (winter of '19). My TSW "Watkins", however, have suffered rim damage a handful of times, all minor except the one time (the last time) I went through a tunnel and the rail took the paint off the ends of all ten spokes on the rear wheel (front escaped entirely). I got out the gloss and matte black touchup kits and in minutes you could not see the damage standing back five, six feet: that's my benchmark for acceptable touchup on wheels or paint.

It seems to be a common problem. Oem rims in Canada are just shy of 1000 bucks for one. I've got one that's wrecked and the tire shop doesn't recommend aftermarket rims unless they meet factory specs. Mind you, lots of people are swapping rims.

o_O Even with higher prices in Canada, and increased prices in three years, that is a ton more than the already outrageous OEM price of $630 for ONE wheel that I was quoted when I first looked into options to address my propensity for seeking intimate relations with curbs. Hah.

I am buying a set of 4 used rims in Alberta. I am replacing one of my curbed ones. Is anybody interested in buying the others lol?

How much did the powder coat cost ya? Looks like i can get oem rims for a little less than 400 a piece here.. remanufactured i should say.. werw you able to sand your rims with the tires on? My gouges are right on the lip

Show pics, please.

Each wheel cost $125 to powder coat; the caps cost an additional $25 each to match with gloss black paint. You may as well go with a good aftermarket wheel for that price. Each TSW wheel I got cost $440.

Watch out for repaired or remanufactured. My rim was sent to a wheel shop and repaired but it shakes the whole car its so far off of true. Not impressed.

Which repair shop did you go to so I can avoid them? haha

Sorry, ive been trying to research afteemarket rims on customoffset... Decent pair of staggered Enkei etc are only a little over a grand or so. My question for you guys, since i havent bought rims in 10 years. Im looking at reusing my rubber, theyre barely used.. seems alot of people are running wider aftermarket rims and still using the stock rubber? Like 8.5 in the front and 9.5 in the rear? If i went with those size rims what would be my offset parameters for the front and rear? 30-35 for front and right around 40 for rear and not have any clearance issues? And the stock Michelins would fit fine? Thanks

My 8.5 wide wheel in front, 40 offset, is 5-10mm closer to the suspension than what you propose: but a different wheel than my TSW might need that extra clearance. My 9.5 wide wheel in the back has an offset of 39 but has plenty of clearance: here's what the calculator looks like: Rim & Tire Size Calculator. Custom Offsets

And those sizes could be used with stock rubber? I wonder how much the stock rims weigh?

I believe i saw some TSW rims amongst the thousands, how you like em

These look about perfect.. proper offsets i believe .

Yes, no problem. Tire Width for a Wheel/Rim Size Chart You can see from this chart of wheel to tire sizes that the OE tires fit nicely on 8.0 to 9.5; you could even put the OE 255 on a ten inch wheel; now, that would be a stretch. :p

The OE wheels weigh c. 34 lbs (we call them "boat anchors" :D). The TSW wheels, by contrast, are c. 21 lbs.

Thanks for your help, the Niche rims wouldnt be much lighter than stock.. did ya notice much difference losing 10 lbs in each corner?

Not really. I think that carving curves the weight difference doesn't translate to going faster. And my butt dyno when I hit the kickdown switch only feels the surge of acceleration as-is: I can't make any tenths or hundredths of a second difference comparisons. But the wisdom says those differences are real, in the real racing world. :D

I don't want to bad mouth them till I talk to them tomorrow. They had the wheel for 10 days and if it was beyond repair they should have said so instead of wasting my time and money.

Any of you guys run Konigs out there??
