Hey all,
Got the Jun BL EVC installed yesterday. Initial impressions immediately below, followed by a question and then more deliberate bullet points. Skip the philosophy section if you’re disinclined.
I'm generally happy with it. There is more power, the sound at lower RPMs is great and the open/closed valve functionality is a huge win for my wife (and, when sleeping, new baby).
The big, mechanical, buzzy rasp at WOT gets me down. You can start to hear it at around 3200-3400; when you get above that under heavy load it just sounds like a huge volume of air slamming through a tin horn. There's no depth or resonance to it.
What should I be expecting?
I was raised on British engines with a mix of American muscle. I learned to drive on a 1966 Triumph GT6. That sound--a straight 6 that has a deep presence at idle and builds to different types of growls as it builds RPM (admittedly, getting buzzy at the high end, but less mechanical, I think) is what I have in my head. Jags have always sounded like heaven to me. I listened to a couple Roush Mustang videos the other night that came close.
But I realized that may not be what I should expect. Do direct-injected, forced induction V6s sound like that? Or is the engine we have in the 3.3 just going to sound like an air tunnel because generate power so differently than what I grew up on? (Like with EVs. They just sound different because the nature of how they make power is different.)
What I don't want to do is sink a crapload of money into making the car sound like something it's not. Frankly, if it _should_ sound like an air tunnel, because that's how the mechanics sound under load, I'm pretty ok with that.
Anyway, early impressions of the exhaust, for those who are (reasonably) uninterested in the philosophical side:
I wasn’t sure about it yesterday, but I liked it a lot more this morning. The sound—driving around the city—is much more “sports car” than “fast sedan”, which makes me happy. It’s that 3500+ sound I’m working on reconciling.

- First video--which is a cold start--is here. Love it. Not overly loud, and I love the presence it has, despite the mechanical aspect. Partway through, you can also hear what it sounds like when the valves close. My wife loves this feature. Move videos to come.
- Live in DC, so I spend the majority of my time under 3200 (if I'm WOT in my neighborhood, something is wrong), and it's bringing me great joy in that range.
- I haven't been able to collect any real data to quantify, but there is more power. Sport mode in this car has always felt like it wanted to _go_, now there is a pop when you're rolling and smash the go pedal to get around someone, and overtaking at speed is even smoother than before. (Honestly, as I write that, I realize it's a more significant performance upgrade than I gave it credit for yesterday.)
- No problems with drone, despite not being able to install aftermarket tips. In fact, I am debating whether I’ll put on the Aliexpress tips at all.
- The tech who installed it did a beautiful, clean job, getting all the cabling and transmitter bits to live in the spare wheel well. The one thing was he hadn’t realized it was an EVC, so it took longer than expected (and cost a little more).
