Hello Everyone,

I have a 2018 Kia Stinger GT2 3.3L and I live in NY... Unfortunately they tell me a K&N cold air intake is illegal. Do any of you know of a legal cold air intake? Or any type of air intake I can buy that will pass inspection?

Thanks All!

From what I understand none have Carb EO numbers. The only option would be the K&N panel filters and maybe add snorkels.

How often do you have to pass the inspection? Swapping k&n intakes with stock one is a 20min job.

Do you know of anyone who has used the Drop in Panel Filter? I know it wouldn't get much of a HP boost. What I am really looking for is that nice Woosh noise

As a side note...I live in NJ and have to pass inspection. I have BMS intakes but hood was not popped last time I went to have a car inspected. If I was worried I would just buy the intakes I want and change them out every other year to get the inspection done...otherwise I'm sure K&N panels from Kia Stinger K&N Performance Panel Intake Air Filters are the route to go.

That maybe what i end up doing... As much as i hate the regulations for this i am trying to stay in the confines of the law. I just don't want to one day get pulled over and get slapped with a fine because i have a cold air intake.

I definitely have to do a bit of research and see what the Drop in Panels sound like. Out of curiosity have you noticed a increase in MPGs using the BMS intakes?

Who imposes the fine? I would think it would take a lot for an officer to decide to pop a hood.

I have not noticed an increase in MPGs because I find myself driving more spirited to hear the lovely noises.

I agree with you, I don't think anyone who knows to enforce that law would notice it and if they did they may agree on how bad the law is and not say anything. I know I have bad luck when it comes to that so i prefer to try to keep it legal. I'm not sure why they have to make this so hard on us. I appreciate all the help... I'll have to go weigh the pros and cons of each.

I'd say bring it to some Jiffy Lube type place for inspection, maybe they won't pop the hood and if you don't rev it before pulling in it won't cause any suspicion. If they pop the hood and it fails, you get a few weeks to come back with the stock stuff swapped back in. But mind as well try not swapping, maybe you'll luck out.

IMO it's a bit of a stupid rule. CAI doesn't alone guarantee a poorly functioning vehicle, needing special attention. It's too broad a brush they're painting with.

With high flow filters and snorkels you should see comparable CAI performance. But because of the air box, you won't gain any 'noise'. Can't say I'm a fan of people who install CAI's for the noise, it seems a silly thing to upgrade (and money to spend) for that reason.

I don't think they are illegal in NY. The vendors will not ship to states where they are and the only state they won't ship to is California. I have Injens and have passed 2 inspections.

From what I see all of them aren't illegal but the ones for the 3.3L Stinger are. Screenshot_20210322-215658.webp

Im so glad i live in Cowlitz County Wa . No emissions no inspections just tabs we need to buy every year. Low tax rate for our state too.
