Fresh engine air source?

On a stock V6, where is the air pulled from that goes into the air filters? Is it fresh cold air from beneath the car or in the wheel wells? It's not from inside the engine compartment, is it?

I hear (a) about how hot the V6 gets and how well the compartment retains said heat, and (b) about replacing the factory intakes with aftermarket units--that draw air from the hot engine compartment. It doesn't make sense.

Not an expert, but here is what I've read: some recommend the use of plastic intakes due to less heat soak. Small gains can be seen on the dyno regardless. Maybe the better flow is more significant than the higher temp? Many don't see much performance benefit over the stock system, but it looks and sounds cooler.

The problem with the stock system is the very small and very cramped snorkels on the front side of the core support. They actually pull air from right underneath the black plastic filler panel between the bumper and radiator. There's a *very* small air gap - maybe 1/2" - between that panel and the inlets. That's why any aftermarket system lets the engine breathe better. Some are better than others at isolating the filters from engine compartment heat.
Yanking that ridiculous snorkel and using the Big Mouth adapters with the stock filter boxes gives nearly as much power gain as the aftermarket intakes when the system is cold, but has the advantage of always pulling cold air.
The stock filter boxes and air tubes aren't great, but they're not horrendous either.

I switched to using the bigger mouth snorkels with the factory air box and a drop in AEM filter. My best 0-60 mph with the car completely stock was 4.59 seconds. I got a 4.37 second 0-60 mph the other day without using Launch Control. I just simply mashed the gas from a dig and still got under 4.4 seconds.

The snorkels are for real. They just flat out work and they are not expensive if you get the bigger mouth ones.

I also got a 12.72 1/4 mile time with the snorkels and drop in filter. The best thing is that I had a 110.54 mph trap speed. That is 2.5 mph faster than my best stock speed. The online calculators say that is about 25 HP.

The stock air boxes can act like a ram air affect to the filter. That helps the panel filter flow the same air as a cone filter but still have the heat shielding that the stock box offers.

Has anyone considered removing the grill pieces in front of the snorkels? Something similar to the Dodge Charger SRT/SCAT pack grill...got to wonder how much air flow disruption does the grill cause in front of the snorkel.

I don’t have drain holes in mine. However, I barely ever drive mine now and I almost never drive it in the rain.

I check my filter box every couple of days and there has only ever been one thing in it. There was a small dead bee in it right after I got the snorkels. Never anything else though.

*Every* stock air box collects trash, no matter what the path is from outside to the filter. They should be checked every oil change. I haven't noticed any significant collection in mine, but it might be an issue if you drive on dirt or something.

I doubt it'd change performance any, but would be an interesting cosmetic change. Just difficult to execute cleanly.
