Intermittent VIbration

Saw it was the actual factory wheels and not the tyres am i correct?
Nope, it was both the factory wheels and OEM tyres. They even had a Michelin rep come out to confirm the tyres were part of the issue.

Quite unusual. Good to see you’re back on the road now.

Great to see them man up. Enjoy the smooth drives.

That's just nuts. And to have that many reps investigate and come to a consensus on what the causes are and replace not just a wheel or a tire, but ALL FOUR of each, is incredible. What are the chances? Somebody loves you. :D

I must say, I was lucky to have an absolute legend of a service adviser who went above and beyond. I wish they were all like that!.

I am having the same problem. The car is 3 months old and is on 4000 kms. It is a very weird vibration. It is intermittent. The steering will start shimmying just before 100 kph and usually is the worst around 120 kph. It is usually worse on smooth roads. Sometimes I can feel it through seats. I have had the wheels balanced at two different shops but same result. I have a dealer close to my house booked to have a look but it sounded like they didn't take me seriously on the phone when I told them its vibrating.

Make sure they're being road force balanced; a regular balance isn't good enough IMO. I had one shop do a regular balance, then still had my issue and took it to another who did a road force and the difference is very noticeable.

If you have the 19s with the Michelin PS4 tires, they need to be checked for wear often. One of the tires wearing unevenly can cause unbalance and then there's your vibration.

If you check tire wear, its fine, you get a road force and it's still vibrating at the point the tires may be the issue.

Thinking its a problem with the front wheels and/or tyres (PS4), I bought a set of second hand stringer 19 OEM wheels of someone. They are in great condition. For the front two 19x8.0 wheels, this morning I went and put brand new ContiContactSport5 225/40/19s on it. Put them on the car. Got a front wheel alignment done. Driving home, the vibration is still there.

I cant seem to find any tyre shops that do road balancing in Sydney. Google has not been useful at all. I will keep trying.

In the mean time, I have booked a dealer and let's see what they are going to say.

I spent so much time trying to find a roadforce balance in Sydney too! So if you end up finding one let me know too.

This could be unrelated but I learned something new this week: Staggered wheels have a different balancing process than squared wheels.

I had intermittent vibrating at higher speeds and went to the dealer—they said the tire shop balanced the wheels but for squared set up not staggered. They rebalanced the rear wheels and now it’s like being on rails

I have this same vibration, but with aftermarket wheels.

I'm getting new rears next week and found a place to do road force balancing, going to have them rebalance the fronts too (even though the tires are fine).

Will report back whether the vibration persists.

I've not heard of that. Can you please explain the difference?

I have a slight vibration around 80Mph in my G70. I had the wheel balanced checked at Discount Tire, and the guy who checked them said they perfect. Fast forward 3 weeks, I put new wheels and tires on my car for the track and the vibration is gone.

I cannot. The last time I used a tire balance machine it was 2003 my man. But I can tell you what went down

I had new tires mounted and it was done by the recommended Tirerack.com service provider. They felt great then I took a small road trip and hit some higher speeds than I usually do and there was a pulsating vibration. I took it to the dealer (fairfax kia NOVA) and asked them to check the wheel balance during an oil change. I got a call from the service rep who said that the wheels were balanced but as if for non-staggered setup so the rear wheels had to be rebalanced and everything was good to go for pickup

This is good to know, I am getting my rears road forced tomorrow and will bring this up.

Sorry, but this makes no sense at all since each wheel/tire is balanced with respect to itself. Square or staggered, doesn't change how a single wheel goes 'round and 'round. Road force applies a roller to compress the tire some, simulating it's rotation while driving, but it's same process overall.

Someone's feeding you BS.

That would be the service representative Benjamin at Fairfax KIA in Fairfax, Northern Virginia. Thats what he said over voicemail and again in person when I picked up the car. I can see where they removed the previously installed weights and installed new ones on the rear wheels. I am not an engineer but the car does handle like its on rails now with no vibration issues all the way through the speedometer

I think all it needed was a proper balance.

I asked my shop about that, and all he said was different tires will be balanced differently on the machine.

The Kia dealership wasn't lying technically but they made it seem like they were doing something special when all they did was change the settings to account for the different tires.

Yeah, I brought my Stinger in for a similar problem a while back to a local tire shop. Was quick and cheap and left with 1) the same problem but less noticeable, 2) scratches on my wheels where the tech used a screwdriver to pop the center caps off, and 3) a lesson reinforcing why I hate bringing my car in to be "fixed" by other people.

Noticed the shop simply added some weights in a different location on the wheels vs removing the existing weights before balancing, so I could tell right away I got my $23 worth...lol.

Will bring into the local Kia dealer when I have time but I'm still bitter about their tech dropping the front caliper against the rotor during the last job, chipping the paint.

Real question always is whether the slight vibration is less a bother than 1) the inconvenience of the visit and 2) the inevitable added damage to my vehicle.
