If trunk/interior space was the deterministic factor for sales, the Audi A5 would have outsold the A4 in 2019 and the BMW 4 series would have out sold the 3 series. Both of which didn't occur. I think it's more complex and the reason I disagreed is not that you don't have the right to an opinion.. more the statement that Genesis made a mistake and the dream team of Albert Biermann and company don't know auto sales. I would also note that the G70 is newer and less known not only as a model but also Genesis as a brand as a whole. Time will tell but as I said, the Stinger is a great car and so is the G70.
1. The liftback body-style is more of a niche body-style compared to the traditional 4-door sedan.
2. There's a
$5.5k premium for the base A5 over the base A4.
3. Unlike for the
G70, the A4 actually has more than adequate rear passenger/trunk space for the segment; one can fit a reverse facing child seat w/ no problem.
All these factors play into why the A4 outsells the A5 Sportback, as well as why the 3 Series outsells the 4 Series GC.
Being the traditional (more in demand) bodystyle, as well as being a lux nameplate, the
G70 (like for the 3 Series and A4) should outsell the liftback counterpart, but it doesn't.
The 3 Series and A4 (as well as the C Class) also far outsell their mid-segment siblings (5 Series, etc.).
The
G70, otoh, has never attained the sales figures of the
G80, and sales of the new
G80 should surpass that of the
G70.
In addition, the best the similarly
cramped ATS did in sales was
38.3k in 2013.
The 2G CTS (which the ATS replaced) sold
55k in 2011 and sold nearly
59k on 2008.
The CTS regularly sold in the 40-50k; aside from that 1 year, the ATS never broke 30k in sales w/ sales quickly fading.
