Hi all, I have to admit I haven't read the entire manual and figured this out yet, but I am trying to get through the dozens of unfamiliar lights and sounds one at a time with the few minutes I have in the evening! I have checked the forum to see if this questions has already been answered, but have not seen it here either. Basically here's the scenario: I have never had a new car that had one of these key fobs that you just have to have on your person to get in and start your car. I didn't get the Kia auto start because I don't want line of sight. I work deep inside a hospital building and the car is at least 1/8 mile walk from my office. Therefore, I'm waiting on viper or a similar company to come out with a two way auto start transmitter that is plug & play before I get it. My electronics guy says he could hard wire in, but it won't be long before a product comes to market that will be much simpler to install.

Anyway, I was kind of under the assumption (wrong) that if I started the car and walked away from it with the factory key fob, the car would die. Hmmm. So can I go start the car in my driveway to warm it up, take the key fob with me back inside, and have a cup of coffee? Yup. Small victory. Nobody could possibly steal it, right? I assume that if the key fob is hundreds of yards away, and someone gets in it, it will die the second either the door is opened, or a foot is placed on the brake pedal, right? Wrong. So the next thing I do is leave the key fob inside after starting it, go back outside, get in the car, put my foot on the brake and put it into drive. Surely, that won't work will it? Yikes. I can drive away without the key fob. Does anyone know if there is a range that this is possible, or could I actually drive across town without my key fob?!?

I’ve never tested it myself, but my understanding is that the industry norm is that the car takes no action until the next restart.

I believe if you start the car with the fob in the vehicle it is just like starting with a key. Doesn't matter if you then take the fob out of the car. It doesn't continually poll the fob to make sure it's still there.
If you use a remote start the car should not let you drive it without the keyfob. My kids Jeep will die as soon as you try and shift it out of park if you don't first get in with the fob and tap the start button.

Interesting point. I should test that sometime.

ive tested our Sorento SXL up to three miles. Just dings and says "fob not detected"

Wouldn't be able to restart after shut down is all that occurs.

Wow. Thanks for the reply! I don't know why, but that is kind of a shock to me. I guess that means I'm in real danger of driving to work and forgetting my keys at home! Can't wait to get my autostart to eliminate the risk!

The car will remind you that the fob isn't in the car.

This is interesting I've never tested on my genesis but I always assumed the car would not be going far without the fob.

It will NEVER turn off the car if a keyfob is not detected (after its been started) because that's a huge safety concern. Imagine you're driving and your keyfob battery dies or the car loses signal to it, you wouldn't want your car to shut off.

Every other car brand is like that. My VW will beep and ding at your constantly, but won't actually shut down the car.

Thanks for the great explanation! Makes perfect sense. Just wish I had a way to warm the car up and lock it....

FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY!
I was away on Vaca and my car wouldn't start remotely because of the cold. I started it manually and then locked it and thought it would shut off in 10- mins without either fob close by.... it ran for hours before someone let me know... it WILL NOT SHUT OFF!!! I was clear across town. Then I couldn't unlock it. Fobs didn't work, thankfully the hatch opened and I had to crawl through to turn the car off. :(

Really sucks that your remote starter doesn't work when cold. Isn't that the main point of a remote starter.

You start it. Walk away from the car it has a annoying buzzer to let you know the car is still running. If I remember correctly the buzzer is behind the driver's side fender well skirt?

I know these posts are old, but for anyone stumbling across them now, if you remote start the car it will run for the 5 or 10 minutes you have it set to, then shut down. If you open a door, you have around 20 seconds for it to detect the key, or it will also shut down.

So if you want to load something in the back, or let a passenger get in while you're grabbing something etc, you need to toss the key in. But it's also a second layer of theft prevention (the first being that the car has to be locked to remote start it).

My 2022 just does a couple second long electronic beep. But it still won't let me lock it, either manually or via the remote, while it's running, which I find really annoying. So if anyone has figured out a way to do that, please post it.

If you want to have it locked while running you need to use the app. One thing I like with the app is that you can lock your keys in the car, yet pushing the button on the door doesn't open the door. Does this a few times when out exercising and don't need my key's jingling in my pocket.

You talking thebapp? Mine works just fine. Have itbset for 3min run time. You can get certain conditions why it doesn't work. Manual spells them out.

For the OP, even living in AK, it's a bad practice to start your car, go inside for coffee etc, just ends diluting your oil and increasing engine wear. As soon as the car is idling smoothly, drive off and try to get it well warmed up before hard acceleration or high speed.

If not, get a block heater installed and your car can we well warmed up when you get in, just unpulg it. Don

I drove to my granddaughter's school to pick her up in my 2016 MB SL400. Turned off the engine and discovered it would not start because my key was at home. Apparently with the key on the counter of my bathroom upstairs, it was good enough to allow me to start the car and leave. I had no warning what I had done until the car dash said no fob detected and I realized my key was not in my pocket. Luckily my wife was at home and brought me my keys. The school is probably only about 2 miles away as the crow flies, so I may have gotten a warning had I been further away. At any rate, I now always check my pocket for a key before I drive anywhere. Would the Stinger behaved the same? I am not sure.
