KBB pumps out these random comparison articles all the time along with other sites like car connection and auto123. They just throw together articles in most cases never having even driven the cars just to get clicks and ad revenue.
Okay random was an exaggeration. Basically they compare every model that yields some kind of resemblance. They know that people buying cars will usually narrow down to a couple choices and start Googling a comparison and their articles will come up. What I'm saying is the comparisons are garbage because they just have a staff writer that researches the cars online and writes the story without even getting any seat time.I'm not sure it's all that random. They are competitors in many aspects. I think no one sees them that way because who the hell is buying a maxima? That and all the press has implied Kia is not even bothering with its economy brand competition and is just going after the germans.
That said there really is no comparison between the stinger gt and the maxima. They make a comparison based on price while failing to mention the GT trims would trounce the maxima in every performance category any day of the week. Not to mention the standard tech that I'm sure you need to pay dearly for on the maxima.
The 2.0t stinger is definitely the more natural competitor and despite not having a V6, im sure it is at least close from a straight line performance perspective.
And they list the 2.0T as the "popular" engine, and the 3.3TT as "also available". Ridiculous: gives the false impression that the 4 cylinder engine is the most common. They make a comparison based on price while failing to mention the GT trims would trounce the maxima in every performance category any day of the week.

Nissan sells way more Maximas than Kia sells Stingers.
Realistically, you should always judge a manufacturer based on their lowest line product. Every manufacturer puts maximum effort into the Halo cars and tip trim lines. If their bottom tier stuff is throw away, that tells you how they will treat you with their top tier once it's a couple years old.I had the misfortune of renting a Sentra while on vacation recently and I was not impressed to say the least. I know that is like their bottom of the line car but still, it was awful. I hope the CVT they were talking about for the Maxima is not the same one that was in that Sentra, because it was the single worst transmission I have ever experienced.
I went from a 2016 Maxima SR (other than cosmetic tweaks, same as a 2020) to my Stinger GT. The Maxima was in fact an outstanding car IMO and to me an attractive one. I really enjoyed it. In some areas it was better (comfort, economy). But, the Stinger is by far and away the better vehicle. It is more practical, equally as roomy even though the Maxima is larger overall. Loading things in the Stinger is a breeze compared to the Maxima's tiny trunk opening. The Maxima was a powerful car, but still anemic compared to the Stinger. The FWD of the Maxima had some scary torque steer as well.... 300hp to the front wheels only will do that LOL
Edit: just a quick note on the Maxima CVT, it is for sure very, very good. In regular mode, it behaves very much like any torque converter automatic with faux shifts. My SR had paddle shifters as well, that when you used them gave very crisp "shifts". I would dare say, it almost made makes the Maxima better because it is smooth but still mimics shifts. In sport mode, is when the tranny behaved more like CVTs we all know and hate....very rubber band feeling, but it would for sure ring out the power from the V6 better, the engines torque is higher in the rev band.

Nissan is on the ropes. Tanking. Only staying alive with rental fleet sales. Sad situation. I remember the excellent Datsun 510 and the superb 240 Z (my dad owned a 1973). The early Maximas were cool. The new ones are overwrought styling exercises and ugly as hell.
Interesting... and funny enough I had a Maxima (rental) for this week, drove just over 500km with it, mostly in a 4hr stretch, and IMHO the Stinger beats it in every way, comfort, entertainment, tech, power and looks
That may all be true, but they still sell 3 times more Maximas than Kia sells Stingers, which was what my original reply was about.

Maxima has a name that's been around for 40yrs now....the Stinger just entered year 3.....there is still a hesitation to believe in the Stinger by the masses AND Kia does a poor job of marketing it!
