I've been searching all over to no avail of other instances this has happened. Has anyone else had the driver door brushed nickle trim bubble then peal off? I reported the issue to the Kia Dealer I purchased it from, and after about 4 weeks of back and forth they state it was an outside influence(such as body lotion) that caused a chemical reaction. They are now covering the repair but as a "gesture of goodwill", the car is less than 6 months old with just over 4k miles.... Just wanted to get feed back if this has happened before and if that's truly the cause

Kia must be the most generous automotive company in the world because it seem everything they do is a "goodwill gesture" these days. Must keep warranty work off the books.

Sarcasm aside, I've seen bubbling trim, but usually on fake chrome front grilles. The issues on grilles are usually caused by damage from rocks (I have a spot on my front lower trim because of this), but the interior should not see that type of damage, obviously. If the brushed nickle trim is like anything else, it would be a plastic base, a layer of the "brushed nickel" and a clearcoat on top. The clear coat prevents surface contaminants from damaging the material below it. I can't see any possible reason body lotion could cause such bubbling. Perhaps a caustic chemical could have this happen, but I don't imagine you're cleaning or exposing your car to anything that would incite such damage. I'm sure it's just a blatantly defective piece that had contamination behind the clear coat/nickel that caused it to bubble over time.

Exactly! That's what i was thinking, why is it a "goodwill gesture" if it's clearly faulty material. Now they want me to sign this agreement paper so if it happens again I'm SOL.
I still don't understand how it would happen by lotion as well. Not sure if i should sign that paper or not, I don't think they will fix it without me signing it :/

That dealer might not fix it without signing, but another dealer might fix it as warranty.

Holy S**T!!! How did that manifest? What I am asking is: did it start as a wrinkle or little bubble and then spread like leprosy? Or did it just "explode" into existence?

Whoever said this was caused by some chemical reaction because of what you're putting on your body is an ultra maroon of the first order.o_O:thumbdown:

"Sandpaper slacks", though, does raise the question: do you "knee" your door open when you get out?

(edit: I've just checked this out: that spot exactly lines up with my knee if I don't keep my left foot on the dead pedal. And if you are a fidgeter i.e. bounce your leg up and down while you drive, to the beat of your tunes for instance, that could do it for sure over a not too lengthy amount of time. Also, if you wear shorts and your bare knee rests on that area: and you have higher than normal acidity in your skin, that could cause the chemical reaction; so maybe I was hasty in my judgment of the Kia person having such an opinion. I had a workmate whose acidity was so high that touching bare metal turned it blue. And the more he handled the particular surface the darker the blue got, to the point of purple over time. So this is a real thing.)

So it started by a little bubble on the clear, then that flaked off and then proceeded to turn black. After the clear started to bubble i kept from touching that area, but it kept getting worse and worse.

so do you think i should just sign the paper have it taken care of? Or?

Yes I would sign the paper and have it taken care of for sure if I were you. You're the first to report this issue so chances are it wont reoccur.

They gave you a complete BS response .....................terrible and unbelievable !!

It would be a simple area to wrap in a brushed aluminum vinyl as well , looks very similar to oem ....................

Yes. Sign and get it done. They probably anticipate that it is something that you are doing and don't want you coming back with it again. So they're just covering their assets. :P
Wow. Cheap ass plastic. Well done Kia. :cautious:
Not cheap plastic. Good plastic. All but the most top end cars have plastic in their interiors; even top end cars do, actually. Don't assume that plastic is junk. The coating/finish on it might be. In this case, some contaminant got on the plastic at that spot and the aluminum finish did not bond properly (assuming that the driver isn't causing it somehow; and it doesn't sound like it).

Hate to say it but that is a fault and they should replace the door card completely.

Please explain how aluminum peels like that? It doesn't, unless it's basically thin foil. Looks like plastic that is faking a metal appearance, and the fact that it's peeling like that, this early in the life of the car, implies it's cheaply made. Seems to me that the "contaminant" is OP's sweat or something else on the skin, because that area is where my knee rests when driving.

It's the only known case. If it were a "cheaply made" issue, there would be repeated incidents. But I agree it's probably the knee rub doing it.
