Very interesting and informative video on the reasons for the modern day GDI engines, such as in our Kia Stingers, he explains the basic way it operates, compared to PFI (Port Fuel Injected) engines, and the Problems and Solutions GDI faces.

Hope some of you forum members find the video informative and learn abit more about the basic operation of a GDI engine like in our Stinger. Also mentioned in this video, premuim fuel with it's increased cleaning agents and/or fuel injector cleaner, only cleans the fuel injector itself, not the back of the Inlet Valves.

#2: Kia Stinger V6TT engines have Sodium Filled Exhaust Valves and how they work.

I know many forum members have seen it, thought many of the newer forum members may have not seen it before, Hope you Enjoy.

Thanks for these videos. My car started making metallic knocking noises upon acceleration at lower rpm, usually followed by a loss of boost/power.

I suspect this is LSPI, but not entirely sure. I can't even get this addressed because the dealership cannot recreate the problem since it doesn't happen all the time... And Kia customer support relies on the dealerships to be the eyes and the ears at the consumer level.

Not sure what to do at this point. I would appreciate some advice from you experts on this forum.

Hi there @Chyoon ,
The only advice I can give you, in your search for an answer into your issues, as mentioned you need some mechanical knowledge or advice or even another member who has gone through the same issue , as I have no mechanical advice to offer you, I suggest feel free to start a new thread of your own, to highlight your problem, so other forum members will see it on the forum list, and should reply with knowledge or advice. It's fine to keep your above post here, but I fear almost all forum members will not see it hidden here in this thread.

Hope this helps if you choose to follow my advice, because starting your own thread to your issue will attract attention from other members who can advise you.:)

A shot in the dark here, try switching gas stations and using 91-93 octane fuel if you havent already and see if you see an improvement.

Yes, that does sound like the engine "knocking" or "pinging" and the ECU pulling timing to protect it.

Could be a bad batch of fuel (or just low-quality fuel). It's certainly where I'd start before worrying about GDI issues.

LSPI should be relatively easy to recreate - heavy load at low engine speeds.

I've only used premium actually, which is 91 octane and the highest tier you can get in California. Also almost always fuel up at Costco which is considered top tier gasoline. And this has been happening for about 5 months now :/ it's a shame given that the car is just a year old.

Can you get a camera/endoscope into the intake manifold to check the conditions of the back of the intake valves?

I guess I can buy more equipment to do all that but I feel like I shouldn't be having these issues at just 1 yr mark mark of ownership. Would be great if the dealership can look into this before I spend more money on the car.

I agree totally that you shouldn't be having the issues - but if the dealership aren't seeing the problem, they're not going to spend time tracking it down. You may not need to buy anything if you can either get visibility into the intake plenum yourself or borrow an endoscope.

That said, you can get something for < $40.
