Just got back from my dealer, Huffines KIA in McKinney, TX (DFW area) and the hatch problem is fixed! Their lead mechanic, who just returned from a second "Stinger School" yesterday and is designated as the only mechanic authorized to perform maintenance on Stingers, did the job. John installed the hatch kit per the SB 322 instructions and set the adjustable hatch overslam bumper stops to the specs in the bulletin. We took the vehicle over extended sections of roadway with expansion joints that had caused the hatch to rattle badly...nothing after the kit installation...not a single rattle. I am now a happy camper! The rattle was the only deficiency in an otherwise stellar performer. I purchased my wife a 2017 BMW 430i Gran Coupe this past summer and I'm pleased to say that my new Stinger Premium is the better driving and handling car. I couldn't be more pleased. Also, as a side note, the parts manager indicated that there is a bulletin showing new oil requirements for the Stinger 2.0T engine and that he was going to order some immediately. Roy, the parts manager, also told me about Kinetic Performance Accessories that he can order and are authorized for installation without affecting the KIA Warranty. He is contacting them to see what is in the works for the Stinger. The idea of aftermarket performance parts that don't hurt the KIA warranty is very important to me.

I noticed the rattle the day I drove it home earlier this week. I mentioned it to my Service Manager and he is aware of the issue and has proactively checked my VIN and indeed it is part of the bad batch. He ordered the parts. ETA in a couple weeks +-

My dealer near me Ray Skillman kia told me after wating for 3 days for the parts to come in on the SA322 hatch recall that the parts are on back order lol ....hows that the car just came out and so did the recall

Great! Thank you for letting us know! And I'm so glad to read how you feel about the Stinger compared to the 2017 BMW 430i Gran Coupe!

So I've taken mine in to the dealer and they say that they have installed the kit.. While the rattle isn't as pronounced, there is still definitely a rattle. Am I the only one who has taken their vehicle in for a fix and not had it fixed?

The Stinger authorized mechanic at my dealership had just returned from his second Stinger training and went through the installation of the kit with me. He indicated that the torque instructions in SA322 for the bolts after the new pad and washers were installed was important to the success of the kit. He also said my overslam bumper stops were out of tolerance as required in SA322. My guess would be that if the bolts are over torqued, that the spacing designed to be built in with the new pads and washers might not be there and the rattle might persist. Just a guess, but my rattle was very severe and the kit, properly installed, completely cured it.

That's really great info! I'll bring that with me when I discuss this with my local service manager.

I received my 2.0L today and noted the noise from the back on the way home. Otherwise quite happy. Will contact my dealer.

Congratulations, @jimdr! How did you like driving it home? What color did you get? The dealer will get the hatch issue squared away...

Here is the torque info:
Thanks again for that info..

I took off the brackets off and checked.. first, they were waaaaay over-torqued. Second, one of the brackets had no washers on one side of it.

I went to Lowes and bought the proper washers, installed the brackets to the proper torque, and now the rattle is fixed.

Anyone who has taken their vehicle in and not had luck with the TSB repair, should check to make sure it was done properly.

I’m a little irritated, since it is a simple 7 step process that involves almost no mechanical skill. Makes me want to skip my far more complicated free oil change.

Glad you found the problem! I was pretty sure that your brackets were over torqued since I'd had my mechanic say it was important to follow the specs and steps in SA322 exactly. The fact that your repair didn't have the washers on one side is ridiculous. You might want to check with your Service Manager, not one of the Advisors, to see if they have a designated Stinger mechanic who has been to the recent, Stinger-specific training sessions. You may actually want to worry about that oil change!

Some owners have reported a noise from the rear hatch on bumps. How common is this?
I propose a survey about this, with the following questions:

Stinger model-
Hatch noise- yes/no
If yes- has your dealer worked on it? yes/no
If worked on- is the noise fixed? yes/no

Please reply with your experience!

edit by admin: I just added a poll/survey... Also, a LONG discussion is going on here:
Anyone having rattling in rear of car when the road is bumpy
I justt stop by the dealership and the trunk noise popped up in the computer as a recall.
