Hi guys,

I wanted to let people know of a cheap alternative to the 200-400 dollar intakes out there for the 2.0. I just picked up a Spectre universal cone filter and it fit right on the end of the intake tube. It was a very simple install and sounds great!

I haven’t decided if I’m going to keep it or go with a brand name like K&N, AEM, etc. At 60 bucks (Spectre is like 30), it’s a steal. I mean, have you seen how short the piping is for the 2.0 intake? I can’t justify 200-400 bucks for that.

It defiantly improved throttle response and you can hear that little turbo spool!

Yup air box removal was straight forward. The only bolts removed were on the strut bar and 3 from holding the air box in. The top of the intake rests against the strut bar so I put a small piece of Velcro so it doesn’t rub.

I used to always think about who would buy a universal air filter and look what happened. It’s definitely a great alternative at more than 90% off from the only one available. It makes all the noises your heart desires. Inside it’s pretty tame, but outside it gets pretty loud!

I just did this to my 2019 2.0 Stinger and would highly recommend to anyone with a 2L Stinger. @Marty17 is 100% right about the length of the piping on CAI kits for sale.. it’s about as long as my.. well it’s not very long.. and for $200-400 for the kits, you’re crazy not to just slap a cone filter on the stock intake tube for $25 and have the same sound/performance.

1 thing to note: the Spectre filter’s rubber fitting is exactly the same diameter as the stock intake tube.. so you have to sort of squeeze it in there, and tighten the clamp on it. It holds fine once it’s in there, but it doesn’t just slide in like I thought it would.

Just took my 4 year old son for a test drive around the neighborhood and he says, “I like your new rocketship, daddy.”

I'm a bit leery of temps with the filter open to the engine bay like that (the OEM box gets too hot to touch in our humid 95deg weather) so I ordered a silicone 3.5" 90deg tube to connect the same Spectre filter closer to the air duct from the grill. I also ordered a Spectre heat shield and plan to seal it off somewhat with a thermal barrier. Parts should all be in by Thursday.

This is awesome. I'm interested in this mod as well, but definitely worried about the open air element and heak soak. Please keep us posted!

Dang silicone elbow won't be in til Friday now, but I'll post some photos when I've got it installed (likely sometime Saturday).
 
Does the hot air through the intake damage the engine at all, or does it just limit the performance?

So the elbow came in early, went to work on the install earlier. The Spectre filter is just way too big to allow any kind of elbow turn toward the OEM air duct that is left open after you remove the OEM airbox. Not only that, the Spectre heat shield wouldn't fit directly to the 3.5" OEM intake hose. So I trimmed the elbow down enough to mate the filter to the hose and the shield to the filter. See attached photo. I took it for a spin and performance seemed normal, but it of course had the woosh. Not really sure I like the sound tbh. Gonna have to just trial it for a bit to see if I'm gonna stick with it.

Ah I see. Thank you for all that.
It kind of looks like the heat shield is wrapped close to the cone. Do you think that partly negates the benefit of a larger surface area for air intake that a cone filter offers?

You know I'm not sure, but doesn't seem all that different from the other aftermarket intakes that have boxes surrounding them.

I took the car out again today and I enjoyed the sound. It also seemed to have a smoother throttle response than normal when hitting it hard, but that could've been because it was kinda cool out too. Something that bothers me is that even though it was cool out, the engine bay still got quite hot. The filter was hot to the touch after soaking it up after a short drive. I really need to seal it off as best I can. Another thing I don't like is the current config isn't real sturdy, it's kinda heavy and just hangs off the OEM intake.

I do like the sound more than I thought initially, but because of the heat and the lack of sturdiness, I'm going to install a K&N typhoon next week. Hate to spend over double the DIY version, but I just want something more shielded, sturdy, and better looking.

I see. That makes sense.

I did at one point have an injen cone filter from imporkshark, but without the shield. The heat soak was pretty bad in the middle of August and forced me to retreat back to oem setup.

I hope k&ms shield makes the difference. I heard it does help.
 
7A319E2E-6896-436F-91B5-F58F036DF388.webp 9AF3A791-6524-4D1E-9F97-38D640BF2A0D.webp Finally got the K&N Typhoon intake in yesterday and had time to install it today. Ran into a few annoying issues that made it take longer than it should've:
  • One of the OEM vacuum hoses was a b*tch to get off. Had to pull and turn and pull and turn for 15min to get it off.
  • I could not for the life of me get one of the vacuum hoses fully installed onto the K&N connector (same one I had trouble disconnecting). I got it close enough for gov't work tho and called it good, couldn't risk pushing any harder as the connector is plastic and I could easily see it breaking from too much pressure.
  • Lost a dadgum wrench down in the engine bay while installing the punk vacuum hose to the K&N. Took me 30min or more with a clothes hanger to shimmy the thing out of there.
Took it out for a drive and the sound is more subtle than my DIY version, but still sounds good. Throttle response still feels better than stock. Build quality seems solid enough and given the closed box design, I think it'll handle heat much better. The real test will come soon with all the stop n go traffic on my commute this summer. Overall I'm happy with it, but it's still early yet.
