• PLEASE! It is VERY important that this area is not used for the discussion of technical issues with your Stinger. This section is for posting about regional-specific things like Stinger clubs, events, local vendor or dealer recommendations, KiaStinger.com member sightings, etcetera... In other words, I do NOT want people to need to scour through several different sections to find answers about their heads up display. That's why there's a section dedicated specifically to discussions like that. THANK YOU!

Utah Stingers

How short do your posts have to be? You might be reduced to multiple postings to just converse "politely". :) That will certainly up your post count effectively, and no mod can complain (sometimes they have taken several of mine and lumped them together; now, why would they do that? ;)).

So, what happens when your posts are "too long" and you click "Post Reply"? What do you see?

Have you tried posting from a different computer?

Yeah, I've tried a lot but for some reason it just never works. :( it sucks because I spend so long working on replies and they will never go through. Don't even know if this one will work or not!

Look over the above posts and you'll see several from up your way. Quite a few work at Hill. It looks like there might be more Stingers at Hill than there are Utah Stinger Forum members! :D
Yeah, quite a few on Hill AFB now.

Update on the Alpine Loop: it opened yesterday, along with Guardsman Pass (which was also closed last week), and we did the "loop" (which includes Alpine Loop of course). I don't know if this drive is the most practical but it surely is the best for variety within its length, which is:

From the "park and ride" at the mouth of Big Cottonwood canyon all the way around the "loop" takes c. two hours thirty minutes (not counting stops to answer nature, heh), for the whole c. 86 miles (we did a bathroom stop at the "Homestead" in Midway, so I might be off a few minutes and a mile or two).

American Fork canyon has a fee station near the mouth, which will probably charge a minor amount later (but yesterday we were driving right through without any fee collecting person in the station).

The dicey bit was the upper part of the Alpine Loop, which is narrower than I remembered. A couple of times I and the oncoming vehicle had to slow right down and hug our respective shoulders to assure no swiping off of our mirrors. Heh! :D But that stretch isn't very lengthy and the scenery is stunning as a compensation. We would have stopped and taken a few panoramic shots, but we had gotten a very late start and time was wasting away.

There are a couple places on the Alpine Loop where you can go wrong, the first (if you turn right) will merely lead to a campground, but the second spot (if you turn left) will take you all over heck and gone; just look at the satellite view . So, stay on 92 and you'll be good. NAV is our friend.

The most fun stretch happens to be Pine Canyon Drive out of Midway. Super well made two lane road, quite new (or upgraded recently), with switchbacks galore. It joins into 224 out of Park City. From Midway to the summit of the pass it goes up and up. The snow along the side of the road is still several feet deep, so we probably won't want this drive until July or later. (I'd have had my wife take a picture, but the light was quite gone by then; we only got this last gleam of sunset as we topped Guardsman Pass:IMG_5784.webp
Actually, you can see the snow depth rather well in that shot; I hadn't noticed before.}

So, if we want to do this "Stinger drive", when would that be?

So, now that I'm stable and back in the groove of things after a crazy few months, it's story time! I've almost left the Stinger club more than once, and was a Colorado Stinger for like a month and a half before moving back to Utah. Lol.

I work as local IT for an Oilfield company out here in a small town called Roosevelt in the middle of nowhere, and they decided to sell to a larger multinational company back in November of last year. Whatever, that stuff happens, right? Merger was made official in January, and in March, they did a round of layoffs... 80% of IT got let go, and anyone that was left over got put on a transitional 3 month term. Basically, if you still had a job, you were going to be gone at the end of May. Well, shit. So I went looking for jobs, because 3 months isn't very long, and there was nothing guaranteed at the end of it.

Found a new job, based out of an even smaller town called Rangely, in Colorado. Like 1.5 hrs from me, so not too terrible, but I would have to move. I accepted, and started in early April. Unfortunately, even after moving, I was looking at a minimum 1hr commute each way. 58 miles. Ugh. Problem: My Stinger is leased with a 12k mile/yr limit. My commute alone was going to be 26k miles a year... So I decided to try to sell the Stinger, for the first time.

Right after I accepted the new position, the company I left called and asked if I would be interested in coming back if they had a spot. I said yes, and they said they would keep in touch. They didn't. So I moved my family to the new house, assuming that old company wasn't going to try to get me back. This is where I temporarily became a Colorado Stinger. I even have a Colorado License right now. Lol.

Anyway, I worked at that job for about a month and a half, and got a surprise call from old company! "Hey, this is the position. This is what it pays. Here are the benefits. Are you interested?". I was super confused, they hadn't talked to me since they said they'd keep in touch. Where's the interview? Over the phone, in person? Where was the "Keeping in touch?". I initially turned them down, because I had LITERALLY just unpacked my last box that day, and didn't want to/couldn't afford to move again. They asked if I would think about it over the weekend, and they'd call me back on Monday.

Well, shit. I had initially hand waved it off, but the more I thought about it, the more I knew it was the right decision. The pay was less (~15k/yr less) but everything else was better. It was closer to my wife's family. It was back at a place I liked, and liked the people. It was in a bigger city with more amenities (Not that Roosevelt is big, but there's not even a single fast food place or grocery store in Rangely). Living was cheaper with more options. My commute would be much shorter (20 mins), so I could keep the Stinger under my lease mileage (But don't tell my wife that was a part of the decision. Lol). And finally, it offered full benefits. Paid time off, very good health insurance, the whole package. After a few nights of deep searching and tears, I decided I would accept the job.

Only problem, Moving is extremely expensive. Between Rent+Deposit, moving expenses, and the paycheck delay from starting a new job on a slower pay schedule, I had maxed out my credit cards (Ok, they were almost maxed out before this. Haha), had to borrow money from my parents, and I had signed a 2 year lease at the new place...

So they called me back on Monday... "I'd love to take the job, but I can't afford to move back." They asked me to get numbers, and they'd see what they could do. Ended up looking at ~5k between moving expenses and the cost to break my lease. The next day, they offered 4k, and I took it. Paid the landlord 2 months of rent to break the lease, packed everything BACK into boxes, and U-Hauled ourselves back to Utah.

We didn't have anywhere to live yet, so we took over a few rooms at the in-laws house, and put everything else in a storage unit. My wife decided she wants to buy a house instead of rent, so we're sticking here for a bit... But our debt to income is just a tiiiiiny bit too high to qualify for the houses she wants, and I don't have any proof of my overtime or on-call pay, which is a good chunk of change. "You know, if you sold your car, we could afford a lot more house!", she says to me... I kind of agree, and see if I can sell the car easily. A bit of time passes, and we decide on an alternate method - We stay with her parents until October, pay off ~8k in credit card debt, and by that time my pay statements will show my on-call hours as regular and repeat income, our DTI comes waaaay down, and I can keep the Stinger!

Woo!

So there's the story of how I moved across state lines and back, had 3 jobs, and decided to sell and then not sell my car twice, all within the span of two months.

 RL as a ping pong ball. Glad to have you back, even though none of us knew we'd lost you. Glad you are keeping your Stinger!

@hotcorner85 I believe you can attach pics as a "Newbie". There is no restriction on anything but posting links, if I am not mistaken.

While I'm "here", I'll just update the proposed "swarm" idea. I drove Alpine Loop again this week and the road is really entertaining, as long as it isn't thronged with traffic: which this week it wasn't. You just slow down on the blind curves and open it up on the bits where you can see far enough ahead to not be a hazard to self and others. :D Stay on "92" each time (two I believe) you are given a choice which way to go, and you'll arrive in Provo canyon in c. half an hour, forty minutes.

The canyon has a payment booth at the west (beginning) end. But they gave us a "day pass" of some sort for free. Only people camping have to pay a fee, I believe.

Going to the loop with a big group tomorrow should be fun if anyone wants to join

Damn, sounds like fun. I'm up in Bear Lake this weekend with my Stinger, I took Logan Canyon to get here which unfortunately had lots of traffic as always, but the parts there were openings were fun!

I gots to know: when and where are you meeting, and who are "you"? Not that I can make it, being Sunday and all - Mormon commitments, you know - but you never know; the real world could cut me a break.

And Alpine Loop is fun. You'll love it. The rest is even more enjoyable as a drive venue: once you get to the other end (north end) of Midway and head up Pine Canyon Rd, that is a blast; Guardsman Pass, all of it.

But if you're coming from around Hill, "your" loop would be even bigger and would probably turn onto 224 and through Park City, then around via I-80 and I-84 to Hill again? That, would be quite a drive! :D
